ANOTHER Bus vs pedestrian accident!

I am not saying it's her fault, but seriously...how does a sober, sane adult get hit by a bus? We were taught from about age 3 about looking both ways...I just don't get it.

They don't look the third way...

It honestly is probably 50/50, the pedestrian should look both ways, but the bus shouldn't be in a position to hit them either.

I know we CyRide drivers are always taught to drive defensive and account for other people's mistakes. I'm sure there are tons of opportunities every week, even in Ames, for CyRide drivers to hit pedestrians (especially during the school year), and we manage to avoid them without incident.

Well considering she was in the middle of the street and the bus was making a left turn makes you believe she did look before crossing plus she supposedly had the right of way too. I don't even like driving near the DART buses because they are so unpredictable with when and how they are going to change lanes. I've nearly been side swiped myself before when I was driving along side one. I've also seen them blow stone cold red lights before too.

Like I said, I am not placing blame...the bus driver should probably have seen them, but outside of a kid mindlessly running, a drunk or some other abnormal factor...by and large, you should be able to avoid it.

I wonder whether or not there has been any change in the quality and/or quantity of driver training that might be a factor here. Oddly enough, I just read a story in the Register concerning the lack of adequate training of tugboat captains serving on tugs at major ports and river terminals; these supposedly undertrained captains or pilots are said to be a cause for the increase in accidents on commercial waterways.

Maybe she was a Target employee.

DART is terrible. We were coming home this last year from a Chops game had a green light and were heading home with the kids early, and boom a bus nails us in the intersection. I hit the brakes hard enough to aviod the full on T-bone, but wasn't fun none the less. Everyone was ok, but our car was totalled. Long story short the driver was driving a second shift and on a non-regular route. I don't think their driver quality is the best.

I can tell you that this isn't just the bus drivers downtown. I walk downtown nearly every day and I don't think the drivers know the rules. I only walk about 6 blocks and at least once a week I see a car get very close to hitting a person. A lot of the people walking are idots as well.

I think riding a motorcycle has made me more aware of my surroundings. Even though I may have the right a way, I try to make eye contact with that driver to see what they are going to do. 9/10 times you can usually spot the idiots just by looking at them.

I used to work for CyRide and I can say that I had a lot of close calls on campus. You cannot account for people's stupidity.

Yeah, when you ride motorcycle it certainly enhances your ability to watch out for others.

Exactly. Just look at some of the people on CF. Oops. Did I just post that?

I actually live at that intersection downtown and have seen busses make that turn about 1000 times. It is amazing how fast they drive on that road. Walnut St. is a narrow brick street and they plow through those turns like it's an on-ramp to I-235. Very sad that this happens so often.
