Alli Ragan St John appreciation thread

I have a niece and nephew who are both wrestling. They are 9 and 6, I believe. They are both doing pretty well in it. Unfortunately their parents are Iowa grads and big Iowa fans so if either get to be D1 good it is unlikely they would ever end up at Iowa State.

I'm not predicting either will be good enough to wrestle in college...

Play the long game.

I saw a graphic that had most match points scored at the state tournament...there was a Lauren Metcalf from Ames High on there...is that one of Brent's kids or are their kids not that old yet?

Not one of Brent’s kids. I’m not sure if there is any relation there or not.

What should be considered is the high school participation in gymnastics vs wrestling. Iowa is not a hotbed for gymnastics, but it is for boys' wrestling, and the girls have watched their brothers, fathers, and uncles compete. If you can't field enough players to have a gymnastics team, then why not start a club wrestling program? I would bet there is enough interest to start a full squad. Add it to the men's wrestling program and do what the track and cross country teams do. Share staff and facilities. It might even get the wrestling program its own practice facilities.

Trainers and staff along those lines that would be an awesome idea. Coaching staff? No way.

why not / couldn't the gymnastics funds be allocated to another sport ( woman's wrestling club)
Eliminating a sport that doesn’t lose that much money only to replace it with another sport that will lose money doesn’t make much sense. Implementing a new sport would cost money too and eliminating a sport already in place just isn’t going to happen.

The harsh reality is women’s sports needs to focus on losing the least amount of money possible.

I have no real knowledge of the finances and those who would know have already said not happening, so I'll take their word....but....I really have a hard time believing that fielding a women's wrestling team would be more expensive in the long run than a gymnastics squad given the equipment and maintenance needed for each sport. Also, the level of enthusiasm for girls/women's wrestling right now is off the charts. Gymnastics has never been big at the collegiate level. Especially, if there is some big controversy with the gymnastics right now, seems an opportune time to cut the cord and get in on the ground floor of women's wrestling.
