All "Gripes" with Greg McDermott

Re: McDermott's Magic Extension: Last Time, I Promise

Like the responsibility to successfully compete at a major college program level?

I would not define what we have done as successfully competing. Unless you define that as just taking the court, therefore you are competing therefore it was a success. But not necessarily successfully in terms of winning.
Yes, and what is that? Obviously we have expectations. Hell, JP can say 4 wins is successful to him.

For the discussion, the actual contract words of what vmbplayer is referring to:

5. McDermott shall be held accountable for the general responsibilities of themen's basketball program, including the budget and the recruiting, training, supervision, evaluation and performance of student-athletes and coaching staff. McDermott is responsiblefor evaluating, recruitipg, training and coaching student-athletes to compete successfully against major college competition in a quality men's basketball program.

How many BCS conference schools have not made the postseason in the last 4 years? Id say you could make the case he isnt 'competing successfully against major college competition'.

Termination with cause?

Re: McDermott's Magic Extension: Last Time, I Promise

Wayne Morgan could have some fun if he wanted, turn himself in on a bunch of rules he broke, the NCAA takes schollies from us, then for each one our current coach could get extended till next century!

cy1010, I looked at this this past weekend and drew the same conclusions you did. However, as alarson pointed out, an associate AD told Paul Clark he was given the 3 year extension to 2015.

I read the contract as being through May 2013. The original date plus 1 year for the lost scholarships from 06-07. I understand and agree with what khaal is getting at about it having been our option to take the 2 year penalty all at once in 06-07. However, I read the whole clause as McD being at a competitive disadvantage for the years he didn't have 13 scholarships available so it gave him a year for every year he didn't have the full compliment. The idea being that he would get another year to turn it around because a year where you're handicapped is a poor measure of your ability to do well. I think since he only had to deal with that 1 year he should only get 1 more year.

In retrospect, we should have taken the penalty all at once. It made no difference. They all left anyway.

Re: McDermott's Magic Extension: Last Time, I Promise

They might have put the 3 year extension, based on a ridiculous interpretation, down on paper and signed off on it.

If so, that should be a public record. If there is a signed document regarding the three year extension, a media outlet should request it to see what it says. If there is not a signed document, then the original contract should still be subject to interpretation.

Re: McDermott's Magic Extension: Last Time, I Promise

I have no idea what the AAD told Paul Clark. I'm just saying if someone offers you an extension you are going to have your lawyers write up the agreement and get it signed.

Even if there is no signed agreement, a verbal agreement is still an agreement. And yes, it does mean jack. McDermott could easily argue detrimental reliance and have the extension honored (again, resident experts feel free to jump in, but seems like textbook stuff here.)

Nope - statute of frauds would prevent this.

Personally, i dont recall his contract and extension being discussed in such detail... some details have been found as of this week. So no... not beating a dead horse.

You mean they offered more verbally than they have written in this contract?

The new info is great and all; but it doesn't change the fact that Mac is under contract until 2015 and we can't afford a buyout

It's not about finding an angle to get rid of McDermott, which you would know if you read the posts in the thread.

This isn't about McDermott, it's about Pollard.

Actually, that's the very "fact" we're debating.

Re: McDermott's Magic Extension: Last Time, I Promise

We are turning into GMAC haters now that we are stuck with no hope for improvement for many years. A lot of us feel that the MBB program is slowly dying from terminal cancer. There is little chance that GMAC will do something really stupid like LE or his assistant Randy Brown did. Is it possible to give him differential pay if he takes a lower paying job somewhere else? To me that is the best for all - GMAC has a new chance to succeed at a midmajor with high major pay, and we have a chance to find someone who can possibly coach in the Big 12.

I am glad that the contract terms are being scrutinized. Maybe we can somehow minimize the costs of this mistake, or at least keep it from recurring.

jiri is probably the only guy in the world that has taken a car ride in a 1980s buick that cost a half million dollars

That very well might be the best win/win for all parties, if it could be worked out

GMac's contract and extension

I wish people would get it right. So many think JP came out in year two and GAVE GMac an extension. This just isn't true. The extra years were built into the original contract. Due to APR issues and the D1 Scheduling accusations, ISU was set to lose scholarships. Because of this, there were clauses in GMac's original contract that extended the contract if scholarships were lost due to issues not under GMac's control.

So here you have it

6 years- original contract
2 years- 2 scholarships lost due to APR issues related to Morgan's players and player turnover from coaching change
1 year- 1 scholarship lost due to Jiri's NCAA infractions.

That, my friends, is how GMac ended up with the years on his contract. JP didn't just come out and give GMac an extension for no reason or for bad luck.

If you don't like the original contract, then I don't think you really have an idea of where the program was at the time. We weren't paying squat so we offered 6 years to compensate. We had lost players with the LE fiasco, lost players with Morgan's firing, and lost players to attrition. All of which created serious APR issues that cost the program scholarships. We were in the middle of the D1 Scheduling issue and while that turned out to be nothing, the perception was that something was not right. The contract had to have long term ramifications in order to draww candidates.

Now don't get me wrong, I am not making excuses for GMac. I am just pointing out what the contract is and why it was draw up that way

This was my question. How do we even know we are seeing the whole agreement? It could have been amended to include the three year extension and we don't have that document.
