Generally they are great for reheating things that turn to mush in a microwave. Pizza is a great example. They are also good for pork chops, chicken if you don't need a lot. Frozen Tater tots are great in them. I would not get one smaller than 4-5 quarts. I have only had the one without the shelf, but those look interesting.

I bought this one in May to use for just myself.

I use it once or twice a week and love it. I definitely wouldn't go smaller than that if you've got a wife and two kids.

Wifey is adamant we get one for Christmas.
What size does a family of four (kids 10&5) actually need?

Size, 3Qt, 4Qt, 7Qt, 10Qt?
Do you get one with a basket/drawer, or do you buy the larger with Shelves (looks like a min oven).
Price- What should I plan to spend?
Brand recommendations?
Stores/website to purchase from?
Brands to stay away from?

Odd, because I just saw an ad for an air fryer when I was watching a movie last night and thought about getting one for three easy payments of $49.95. But wait, there's more. Just kidding. That's all I got.

Well ... besides this. You'd probably want to get a larger one just in case you get a wild hair and decide you want to rotisserie cook a whole turkey.

I still can't believe that someone in a marketing department somewhere decided to rename a convection oven/broiler and everyone fell for it.

Yeah, the physics just don't work. You can't mimic the heat transfer from 400° oil with air convection.

We got a Ninja grill and air fryer on Black Friday in 2019 and love it. We've nearly worn it out. Plus we hardly ever use the oven anymore.

If there was a con it would be cooking area. As a family of 3 it's probably enough area to get by but it could be an issue for anything more than 3.

It's a french fry master. Also use it weekly for roast veg: asparagus, brussel sprouts, and cauliflower. Fish fillets are also good to go. I've also made wings in it (baking powder helps the crispy).

We got the Ninja 2-in-1 airfryer and pressure cooker. I think it is 6-8 qrt, but you can only put so much in before blocking air flow. We use the airfryer much more often. Pressure cooker is good for soups and slow cooker recipes.

Don't know about brands, but the bigger the better. If your food is crowded it comes out soggy. You need air around as much of your stuff as possible

I don't have one but aren't these supposed to circulate the air at a higher rate than a convection oven?

If I did get one it would be one like a mini oven. They seem more versatile.

Yes, they circulate quite a bit more air. And yes, get an oven style one because you can use it as a regular oven/toaster oven as well and they have quite a bit more capacity.

And ps - I agree with other posters on leftover pizza. Beats the heck out of microwaved.

I got this Cuisinart air fryer last year at kohls for about $120 (after 40% off coupon) + 20 Kohls cash. It's been great, that I hardly turn on my main oven anymore. I use it for reheating lefover, roast beef, chinese roast pork, etc.

I find that with most stuff you have to shake the pot once in a while to move things around. Use mine a lot to make chicken nuggets and tater tots for my picky eater.
