advice for first time home buyer

Duh! Duct tape. Can't believe I forgot it. And touch-up paint. Just keep some from when you re-paint the entire interior of the house either the first or second times (which you will, especially if the move involves a woman). Maybe some light spackling to repair nail holes? There are a lot of power tools you might use but one you will absolutely use is a drill. If money is tight, you can get a Skill corded drill at Walmart for $30. But cordless is better. And a leaf rake. Are you writing all of this down??

The best thing you can get is a gift card to Lowes or Home Depot. A big one. Don't worry, you will use it. That and the friend who knows all of the things I mention above and has a truck you can borrow.

Buying our first house, and will be moving out of an apartment. What things do you need at a house that you don't need living the apartment life. Thanks!

Don't rush over to Slumberland the week before the closing and buy a bunch of ugly furniture, or talked into a big living room/bedroom set(s) just because you're getting this house

--you may hate it, or some of it after time passes.

Take your time and add pieces as you go that have more meaning.

--While cleaning out the apartment, take the time to THROW AWAY, RECYCLE, SELL, or DONATE anything you may not need or use. Don't haul boxes of apartment crap to fill you're basement because you think you might need it down the road.

Get rid of it (just because you have more space---you don't have to immediately fill the space up)

Already buy the house, or still looking?

If you're still looking, do a walkthrough with an electrician and a plumber that you trust, prior to making an offer. This is above and beyond an inspection, by the way. A lot of inspectors took a few classes and got a sheet of paper. I have yet to see an inspection that was worth ****, and I have a lot of disdain for the whole thing.

Make sure you don't regret your purchases in a couple of years because **** is falling apart.

Oh yeah. Make sure you plan for adequate storage space. If the house doesn't have it, don't buy it.

getting something more private for you and Robin?

Shop vac. Buy a GOOD one, not the cheapie from Walmart.
A decent bristled broom to sweep out the garage (assuming you have a garage).
Garbage can
All I can think of right now that isn't already mentioned.

Edit: A step ladder. A 6' one is fine. My first was 8' and that's longer than you need most of the time. Also, that little two-stepper is very handy.

Good advice here. I've bought two houses and both inspectors were worthless.

Get some rope. You never know what you're going to need it for but you always end up using it.

Also a bat cave.

Connor: [picking out weapons and gear] Do ya know what we need, man? Some rope.
Murphy: Absolutely. What are ya, insane?
Connor: No I ain't. Charlie Bronson's always got rope.
Murphy: What?
Connor: Yeah. He's got a lot of rope strapped around him in the movies, and they always end up using it.
Murphy: You've lost it, haven't ya?
Connor: No, I'm serious.
Murphy: Me too. That's stupid. Name one thing you gonna need a rope for.
Connor: You don't ****in' know what you're gonna need it for. They just always need it.
Murphy: What's this 'they' ****? This isn't a movie.
Connor: Oh, right.
[picks up large knife out of Murphy's bag]
Connor: Is that right, Rambo?
Murphy: All right. Get your stupid ****in' rope.
Connor: I'll get my stupid rope. I'll get it. This is a rope right here.

This is horrible advice....... Of course maybe I am biased because I own self storage near the area he works and lives....

To add to the thread you need to get one of those imitation little giants that go for around $100-$150. Extremely handy to have.

If you have a fireplace and wood is the fuel, get some wood. Then when you lose power, at least you won't freeze. Keep it cleaned and operational. We were without power for two days when one of my babies was only six days old and keeping him warm by the fire was very handy.
