A few things to keep in mind

Just thinking out loud here.

1 - Nothing has officially happened yet.

2 - What if Notre Dame all of the sudden takes the Big Ten up on their offer? Reports have indicated that the Big Ten has told the Irish if they said yes, they'd stop at 12 right? Who is to say that the Big Ten wouldn't play Nebraska, just like they did Mizzou? I know that this is a long shot. But it is still a possibility.

3 - Here is what I still can't wrap my mind around. Why would Texas bolt just because Nebraska does? They are Texas. They run the show. They get what they want. They can't get along with Mizzou? They are really going to let Missouri keep them from getting what they want? Sure, if they go to the PAC 16, they get more money. But they also have a much tougher road to a championship game. They are taking all of the South (Baylor doesn't count) with them so there is no difference in recruiting. If Texas really wants to stay in the Big 12, they can make it work.

4 - Just my thought here but if the PAC 16 doesn't exist, there is no reason why the Big 12 (with or without Nebraska and Colorado) couldn't get the next bit FOX television contract. It would be up for grabs between the Big 12 and the PAC 10. That's a toss up that could go either way.

Just a few thoughts here on a Thursday morning.
 
Texas doesn't care if they run the show if they can't get a MAJOR TV contract while running the show. That is the only thing the PAC16 deal offers is a huge payout for the teams at something like $20MM per year.

But if somehow, the Big 12 would stay in tact, they could start their own TV network and make a lot more jack.

Is that theory wrong?

This is why I'm waiting to see what happens on Friday. I can't understand why Texas would go to the PAC-10 when both the PAC-10 and Big 12 conferences have TV contracts coming up in 2013. Wouldn't it make sense to stay in a conference, get rid of the thorn in it's side (Nebraska) and split the TV money 10, 11, or 12 ways than with 16 other teams?
 
The Nebraska rumors could all be the Big 10 trying to leverage Notre Dame in, who knows?

As far as Texas, sounds like they are trying to get as many Big 12 teams to jump ship so there is no buyout of the Big 12 necessary. I'm guessing CU is behind them 100% here!

I especially agree with #3. I have yet to see a valid explanation there. The only attempts have been something along the lines of "Texas things the B12 North is a joke", okay, that's new? Funny that the Big 12 North was the more powerful (football wise) of the two divisions in the early B12 days.

It's an extreme analogy, but in my mind, the University of Texas is just like the aliens in Independence Day. Instead of moving from planet to planet to suck up all of the natural resources before moving on to the next, Texas moves from conference to conference sucking all the life out of every school before moving on to the next.

Maybe they think they no longer have use for the B12 or any of it's member universities and it's time to try and suck the life out of the Pac 10?

Yes. Sort of. I'm sure a new tv deal could happen but not to the tune of $20MM. No way. Not with the eyeball count that the Big XII has versus PAC16.

They could, but will they?

According to the ESPN story they PAC 16 would be divided into 2 divisions. Texas, Tech, A&M, OU, Okie St, Colorado, Arizona and Arizona St on one side and the old PAC8 on the other.

It also states that the league would lobby for 2 automatic BCS bids. With that being said, I don't think the Horns road to a title, or BCS game is that much more difficult...especially with USC about to be sanctioned.
 
Agree, and didn't Steve Sipple go on KXNO yesterday and pretty much squash everything that Chip Brown has been saying and "reporting?"

The thing is I think they will run the show in at least their own division.
 
Chris you make some great points. I also have trouble buying into Texas to the Pac 10. The Big 12 is a better Conference for them. If this Conference had a leader who was proactive and took control as opposed to being batted around like a kitten it would be a different situation. If I were ISU, KU, KSU etc. i would be firing Beebe and looking for someone to hire and guide expansion.

I trust that JP is looking at options, and I do not think ISU will be left out completely. As long as we end up in a BCS Conference I will be happy. I have a very hard time believing that any program that has competed in the BCS would not have a home. It may not be Geographically perfect but there are conferences that need FB programs with our size of stadium and recent success.

I read somewhere (here, probably) that they DID raise enough money to buy him out but the buyout was voted down.
 
#2 - I gotta believe the NU ship has sailed, regardless of what ND does. There just seems to be too much motion for NU to not have a secure footing. That is presuming all these most recent reports are correct (#1).

#3 - You have to believe that by Texas taking their tv markets to the Pac 10 (and their CA tv markets), they could demand quite a bit more from Fox. That's the only thing that makes sense. Otherwise in the BigXII, the only real market is just Texas. Stands to reason by adding LA, SD, SF, Seattle, and whatever other markets are there - it really ups the price. FYI - for this arguement, I'm presuming nobody cares too much about the STL/KC market - hence no Mizzou to the Big 10 either. Or that Mizzou and I guess even KU, don't command that much of that market.

Nu is a bit of an anchor for the north - national, championship program. I agree that the league could lose them, pick up a Utah or somebody, and carry on. Texas doesn't "carry on".

BTW - probably a minor point, but if the south schools bolted to the Pac 10 - would the Pac 10 schools be having discussions about how "Texas never plays up here in November"? See where I'm going?
 
Nebraska is not really a thorn in Texas's side, they generally vote with Texas, specifically in regards to revenue sharing, to keep the other 8 (would be 9 now potentially) from getting it passed.
