8 Year extension for Campbell

Eight more years of winning conference records, beating ranked teams, bowl games, and Big 12 championship games.
Eight more years of steady improvement.

You do the math from 2020 wins to 2024, and then figure out what 2028 adds up to. And 2032.

(There’s gotta be someone here better at math than me!)

How many conference titles did we appear in prior to him, though?

Bud Grant is a terrible coach becuase he never won a superbowl

how did Jim Kelly get into the HOF without ever winning the superbowl?

If we play our cards right, we can be a power team in this conference. Iowa State is never going to be elite every year. But I think we can be a top tier team.

I had a hell of a fun time this year with football. There were many, many years I couldn't say that.

Take it easy coach.

Not sure if you know this or not, but using logic on these folks doesnt work very well

I am going to repeat this in case anyone decides to go back and look and i am on record of saying this before in that thread

i thought option C was calling gunner an idiot and that is why i voted c

good day.
I muted Gunner a couple years ago. He's either a troll or he's mentally unstable. Either way, there's no point in interacting.

Agreed, vey well deserved. I'll be interested to see - and these things usually do but not always - but I would imagine there is also some kind of improvement for the assistant pool, etc. Generally the two go hand in hand with extensions but not always

Grant won an NFL championship in the late 60 with the Vikings. (Before they merged). I always hang my hat on that.

CMC is a great fit for ISU culturally and strategically, as I have detailed elsewhere.

Does he have some "areas for improvement"? Yes of course. But I am somewhat encouraged how he has (albeit slowly) grown and improved as a coach over the past 9 years. e.g. "hey maybe special teams DOES matter"

I was going to post something about his ceiling probably being not the highest of highs like- "if he was gonna win a conf champ, he'd have done it by now" so let's just understand that's what we it will be.

But you know what? Let's comp Bill Snyder, who I think we all recognize as about as good as it gets.
  • After year 9, CMC is 63-51 (55%) and BS was 66-37-1 (64%) - but with a lot more cupcakes, less conference games, and avoiding OuT half the time.
  • Snyder got his first 10 win season in year 7 (CMC year 9).
  • Snyder won 2 conf champ in 27 years (4 appearances in CCG, lost 3; other title was 10 team no CCG)
  • Got first conf champ in year 15 -- on his 3rd CCG appearance.
  • Career at KSU 65% win percentage
Is CMC going to be Bill Snyder level success? IDK. But he is close enough to the path that I think it's hard to imagine getting a better coach.

Yep. Hopefully in those 8 years we'll have taken another step. Winning the conference championship game, and/or CFP appearance.

Campbell seems like the type of guy that enjoys coaching and living in Ames and understands he can make a great life for him and his family by living here and not chasing a national championship. Way to many coaches would be happier and better off if they took the example of Campbell and Freerents at EIU and stayed where they have been successful.

Good for him and the university.

This is incredibly well done. Down to the bullet points. I applaud you.

This isn't a knock on Campbell, but KSU was in a much worse place when Snyder took over than what Campbell inherited.

We have finished over .500 in conference play 31 times in our "illustrious" history... Matt has 7 of those seasons.

Removing the seasons where we played 5 conference games or less (Prior to 1930)... Matt has 7 of our 16 winning conference seasons.

We have 11 seasons of 8 win or better.. Matt has 4 of them; and doing so with 9 conference games every year.

Looking forward to next year's "Matt Campbell to (insert school name here)" /s
