5 Kickers, 5 Punters

I've only said things about Leonard that I think he would agree with. He did get burned last year more times than he should have. Because of this, he has taken the steps in the offseason to correct that. Watching film, hitting weights, talking to coaches, talking to players, talking to Hobbs. I expect Leonard to be a completely different player this season. I have all the faith in the world in him.

So you dont think Mahoney would agree that his consistency is missing sometimes and that he can improve? .... Alright then.

Alex Henery walked on at Nebraska. Would he have come to ISU if offered a schollie?
I worked a kicking camp with Henery back at the end of June. It didn't occur to me to ask him if he would have considered Iowa State had they offered him a scholarship.

I dont think he would agree that he did not have enough air under his kicks, or that he is missing potential. I would hope he isnt "worried" about his consistency. I hope he is confident in his abilities and that he has put last year where it belongs, in the past. I think he would understand that there are things he needs to improve. I would hope he would say that missed extra points last season were inexcusable, whether it be illegal block, an All American DT walking through a sick and depleted line, or an over corrected kick in the wind. I would like to believe that consistency is something he has worked on as much as he has worked on improving his power.

Missing kicks is something that everyone can see. It is charted down and its not arguable. Something like missed coverage, interceptions, dropped passes, while some are recorded stats, they are not cut and dry like field goals are. So it is easy for guys like you to point fingers and say, that is the reason. Everyone has said it, including coaches. It takes a team to win and a team to lose, its not on one guy.

I guess you're never wrong, huh....or you just dont want to admit I have a point, But agree to disagree.

and the bolded part, is debateable. Ask shaggy.

And didnt you and another poster both say LJ's coverage lost us the KSU game... right.

He may not be an all star, but I think you can make a lot of things out of those stats. First of all, 3 of 5 from 50+ is nothing to scoff at. As far as XP's go, who do you hang the blocked kicks on? At least one of those (Suh) should be on the entire kick team and another should be on the officials who failed to call a defender using his teammate to gain elevation and block the kick. That was a good kick that was blocked using an illegal move.

Yes, he could improve his consistency, but it also takes 11 players for a successful kicking game.
The thing that really shows me just how inconsistent Mahoney has been, is all of his misses in 2009 from the 30-39 range came in one game (Baylor.) That was a game that he also hit a field from 45. And it's not just that he's missing from the 30-39 range but that throughout his career, the misses have come from 30, 31, 35, 38, 41, 41, and 42. Distances that certainly should be a give me at the D-1 level unless the conditions are absolutely horrendous. In his 2 years at ISU, there have been 5 games where he has missed field goals from a shorter distance than field goals he converted in the same game (i.e. making a 45-yarder but missing a 35-yarder in the same game.)

As for who to put the extra points on, I would need a stopwatch to really determine that. From the snap to the hold to getting the kick off should happen in 1.3-1.4 seconds at the D-1 level. If the times are slower than, kicks are going to be blocked. If that is about what Mahoney's time is in getting the FG/XP attempt off, than it could be other causes to the blocks.

I want Mahoney to succeed, but until he starts showing A LOT more consistency and accuracy, I'm going to be holding my breath every time he comes in to make an attempt.
