***2026 NCAA MBB coaching carousel***

Part of the reason Campbell is gone is because JP understands people will be coming for TJ and he has to offer enough to keep him here.

Don't think so - even though basketball has been much more successful on a national level football has and likely always will drive the department financially. You do not give up a successful football coach to keep a basketball coach - it does make financial sense IMO.

Respectfully gotta disagree. As big as BB is at ISU, FB is the main financial driver at every school. You don't lowball or let go a good successful FB coach to be able to pay a good successful BB coach.

I do think/agree though that AD JP has to do everything in his power to keep TJ though (short of taking anything away from FB.)

AD JP has to know that if he lost Otz, he quite possibly would lose his job and imo should. As a fan I would never forgive him for letting a dream job coach get out of Ames.

Sanderson, Hoiberg, & Campbell are all understandable to some degree. Otz & Fennelly would not be. They need to be lifetime Cyclones who retire at ISU. Period.

I'm not so sure about that. What these schools care about--besides not going too far into debt--is building their brand. You can build a basketball brand (KU, UConn) that has real value, and at the same time be a big nothingburger in football. Granted, if your brand is football-dominant, the $$ is by definition bigger. But so's the competition for that bag. Smaller schools like ISU can compete with bball while they'll never be able to compete with the biggest boys in football. It'll never happen.

Pollard more than anyone knows that if the price to keep Campbell here was on the order of what PSU was offering, he was always going to have to attempt to make a hire he believes can get 90+% of the production at a fraction of MC's cost to make sure NIL House settlement funds can be covered for as long as possible. If reports that TJ got $5M of that $20.5M pool, his program is probably being weighted heavier in the distribution than most places already. Initial projections across P4, based on average revenue brought in by the sports, said football should get around 75% and 17% for mens/womens basketball combined*, with the remainder going to other programs. Point being, there's indications that between the two programs, JP puts the thumb on the NIL scale slightly for Otz.

Coach Fred Hoiberg is into building a legacy for himself at Nebraska. I do not believe he would leave for the KSU job; however, if he were offered the KU job I believe he would accept that position. Any winning that Fred can accomplish at Nebraska is legendary. The school is 0-8 all time in the NCAA Tournament in 8 tournament appearances.
We used to have a coach say similar things about building a legacy….

That's a nice sentiment. I hope Otz is always a Clone. But if he leaves it's not the fault of Pollard.

Cignetti is getting paid $13M annually after winning the national title. He's worth it if IU continues to be a Top 10 team.

Otz will get some $10M+ annual offers over the next couple years. The reality, that is probably not a paycheck ISU can write. Unless some wealthy person steps in a pays a big chunk.

We need to hope that ISU becomes a school that is a "cradle of coaches". And that falls on the AD. I hope Jimmy Rogers can match/exceed what Matt Campbell accomplished. And if Otz leaves, kind of hoping one of his assistants is ready to step in.

An Elite 8 at Oregon State carries you pretty far
Sure, but he also followed that up with a 3-28 season. There was a point where it should’ve been clear that was the outlier.

It was probably more to do with OSU having so much uncertainty the past few years.

North Carolina State was smart to not let the Final 4 run cloud the right decision with Keats
Yup, we saw what happened with Tang and how foolish KSU was overpaying because Bruce Webber left him a guard that carried KSU to.the elite 8.

Who is responsible for hiring and retaining coaches at ISU if not Pollard..

He gets a ton of deserved credit for hiring Campbell & Otz. Also he gets criticism for hiring Chizik & Prohm. I'm more optimistic than most on Rogers, but CJFR's legacy is obviously TBD.

I am very much of the belief it is the AD's job to secure the donors & funds to retain coaches. If ISU is unsuccessful in doing that, who else is at fault if not JP?

You obviously don't ever have to deal with budgets?

Its going to be a harsh reality that we aren't a big boy in collegiate athletics...and we can't compete with the budgets of the B10 or SEC. And that gap is going to continue to grow.

Sometimes no one is at fault and you have to play the hand you're dealt.

Can't get blood out of a turnip.

Jamie doesn't print money and donors aren't begging Jamie to give more than already being asked. Maybe TJ has built up enough goodwill among big donors that Jamie could reach out and a donor group would agree to be on the hook for multi millions each year as long as TJ's coach.

But also remember, the donor pie is pretty fixed in size and with the House Settlement, it's going to be a balancing act- pay players vs. pay coaches. For ISU it's not going to be about paying top-tier $ to both.

I'd love for it to be different, but go-forward reality is ISU coaches with Matt's and TJ's level of success will be able to make significantly more at top tier Big10/SEC schools. Not, the AD's fault.

But I'd agree, it Jamie's or whoever is ISU's next AD to hire the "next" Matt or TJ when those situations arise.

you are right. i shouldn't have said racist. I couldn't remember what he got fired for. just homophobic.
I thought the reason he got fired was he got busted drunk driving outside of Morgantown. He should have paid a "assistant" to drive while out recruiting.
