This. And while DD and BM are supposedly Iowa guys is that enough? Looks like it wasn’t for DD and BM may have better offers as well.

The NIL thing is kind of funny, too. Because even if you have a decent budget you have to look at the rest of the league not just the number. 2 million in the big ten is nothing. You’re going to undercut or outbid on the good players and you’re going to overpay for worse players.

IMO opinion, the fact that Devries left without a deal is screwing it up. Especially considering it was reportedly due to NIL, and weve all witnessed them pay Mcnamara, Proctor, etc which has been a complete waste for them
I may not be understanding correctly but isn't the revenue sharing that goes live this year for programs is capped so, in theory, all schools maxing that out will have the same NIL budgets? (I guess a school COULD broker deals for TRUE NIL to get some players more?)

Meaning, any increase to Iowa bball NIL under the new model would mean money having to come from Football?

I have a little different view when it comes to NIL money/recruiting and someone like McCollum. A guy like McCollum who seems to rely on culture and fit with his players might not be a good fit at a place like IU with a big NIL budget. Those places are usually spending as much as they can to bring in a lot of high end talent (transfers and high school) then need a coach who can make the pieces fit together and manage egos. Not saying McCollum can't adjust and do that well, but it doesn't feel like where is strengths as a coach have been so far. He feels like he would be a better fit at a place that has a passionate fan base, but maybe doesn't have an open checkbook NIL budget and can identify somewhat undervalued guys that fit their culture/system (the formula that TJ has used).

Will be interesting to see if Drake is okay taking really good stair steppers or if they want someone that is almost guaranteed to stick around for a bit. Although I think McCollum staying another year isn’t off the table. Guy knows about paying dues.

Hot take: he would be really good at/for Nova.

McCollum fit a lot of basketball centric schools. But I don’t see him as a Main Line east coast elite type

Rumor is Chris Collins is on that list though.

Cyclone fans tend to overestimate Iowa as a job. Fran went to 8/11 tournaments going into this year. That’s very good for a program like Iowa. Although realignment and revenue changes should help them going forward.

If NW ends up needing a coach, NW could do a lot worse than Fran, assuming he’s not fine, who has proven to be a .500 BIG coach with NW level recruits

I also feel like the 'home' aspect always gets overrated by fans. Plenty of people who leave home, cherish those memories, but have no desire to ever return.

Hell, on a smaller scale, I'd guess a large portion of ISU fans would say the same thing about living in Ames- loved their time there, love coming back for visits, but wouldn't want to live there as adults.

If Iowa wanted DeVries their opening offer had to be more than what WV was offering, PLUS enough to make him walk away from that job after a year. Indiana can probably do that. Iowa can't. Especially if you consider that Iowa's NIL program has underdelivered on committed funds already. That already a strike before he takes the call.

The Iowa job is just so bad right now. The new coach doesn't just have to focus on building a team, they also have to get donors to contribute to actually contribute to NIL and get the fans to reengage. That is a huge job to take on.

If Iowa basketball has been more known for their coach's and players' antics than what they've accomplished, maybe it's safe to assume it's not the destination that Clark in Waubeek thinks it is.

Maybe, but they always have a guy like Forbes that would take it

Multiple Iowans are legit candidates, which is helping them

I'm giving you a winner for mentioning Waubeek.
