2025 MBB Coaching Carousel

Ruh Roh, Indiana called McCollum and he said dont talk to me till after tourney, Indiana panics and called Devries and offered double the NIL. Now Devries is dreamin of prime time games in Assembly Hall. Beth is panicking offering to reno Carver. All a theory.

Not sure Indiana would have to up their NIL budget vs. what Devries was used to at WVU. I had heard media report that IU had the highest budget in the Big10.

McCollum is the better coach.

DeVries would drum up more support and NIL I would imagine.

Who the hell is even option 3 at this stage? Is there a world where DeVries gets Indiana and McCollum doesn’t want Iowa? I mean the guy was pretty dang calculated about when and where he made the jump from DII. Would it be a shock if he said now to trying to rebuild that program, especially if he was the 2nd choice?
Certainly better at X's and O's, but the question when you jump a level and then another is do you have the connections to get the staff you need, and can you recruit talented players that want to play in that sort of system.

McCollum seems really risky. Could be a home run hire or he could be in way over his head. Could Iowa fans handle a "slow" rebuild?

Yeah, but McCollum probably does a better job in Iowa City, in my opinion. That would definitely be a risky hire by Indiana at this stage.

I think McCollum would be a much better fit at IU where he doesn’t have to recruit because they’ll pay whatever to get talent there. McCollum hasn’t ever recruited at the level needed to win at P5 basketball so it’s a big risk and not a slam dunk that he could do that at a place like NIL-strapped Iowa.

But who knows, these are all a big crapshoot.

It’s true.

But McCollum is the better fit anyway. The Iowa coach will have to do more with less.
I'm following all the stuff with a lot of fun and laughter at the rumors, the buzz, the tweets, etc. It's really funny.

That said, to say WVU is the better gig over Iowa, just like if anyone were to say Iowa is the better gig over WVU, is just nonsense IMO. They're pretty comparable. Iowa is "home" and that's a factor, but nobody really knows how important it is to DD.

And I disagree with the idea that the Iowa coach will have to do more with less. Iowa's athletic department revenue from the current media deal is going to dwarf what WVU brings in.

How long you think the big10 survives??

Fran laid out the reasons. They’re valid and factual

The comment about Iowa needing to do more with less wasn’t about the WVU comparison. It’s about Iowa’s place in the last 25 years of college basketball

It’s a bottom third job in its conference. Fran was amazing at putting surprisingly talented teams together despite this. A really good fit for Iowa, and it’ll be difficult for that program to do better. Fran’s aversion to defense was understandably frustrating though

WVU's AD answers the question:
We’re committed to doing what it takes to win and I think Coach DeVries knows that. We’ve had multiple discussions about what we need to do to make this program better, and he knows we’re committed to doing it. We’re committed to Coach DeVries and we’re committed to rewarding success and we´re committed to building this. I think ultimately he feels good about what he has here and I think the future is very bright for us.¨
