NBA: *** 2025-26 NBA Thread ***

Puts a bow on one of the worst trades ever now that AD has been shipped to Washington for two 1st rounders, three 2nd rounders and expiring contracts basically. That organization essentially turned Luka Doncic into three 1st rounders and Max Christie. Just such abysmally bad work there.

Lakers absolutely won that one.

I see the Wolves got a pick yesterday for Conley, so they are definitely trying.

I agree with some analysts saying having Gobert and Giannis together won’t work. So this could all get interesting. I don’t see it happening honestly.
I'd be totally fine with shipping Gobert.

But yeah, if they are going to try to get Giannis and play him with Gobert, I hope everyone else is ready to sit around and shoot 3s because that lane is gonna be CLOGGED.

I've been driving all day and have listened to NBA radio a lot. These trades are crazy.

The Bucks are telling teams that they plan on keeping Giannis?!?!

Thought I heard somewhere that some teams would be able to trade more of their picks in the off-season compared to at the deadline so maybe that's why the Bucks will wait. Might not be true though.

There definitely will be some teams with more tradeable assets in the summer if they don't get a deal they want now.

Also, speculation is they'll just shut Giannis down for the year with the calf injuries. Tank as hard as they can for draft pick, keep him healthy for offseason trade, etc. That said, shutting him down would be pretty complicated.

Pacers make a pretty big deal and a pretty significant gamble at that. Zubac will fit that roster nicely and they were unlikely to pay Mathurin in FA coming up, so that makes some sense.

The gamble is with the protections on their 2026 1st round pick they sent. It's 1-4 protected and 10-30 protected. So they are basically banking on some lottery luck and having a top 4 and/or they think there are four really elite talents and a massive drop off beyond that in this draft if they are willing to let that pick go if it's between 5-9.

Now if they do get a top 4 pick in the lottery to keep that selection, add Zubac, Tyrese back healthy, etc. They'll be right back in the thick of things next year in the east. If they got lucky and added Peterson or Dybantsa to that roster they could be nasty.

Massive overpay if they lose that lottery pick. Not sure why they acted so desperate. I get they aren’t resigning Mathurin but they lose that pick and the tank szn was wholly pointless. Yes this draft class is guard heavy after 1-5 but think they could’ve done better here.

EDIT: On top of that, I didn't realize how awful the 1st round picks are too.
  • 2026 OKC pick - will obviously be at/near the end of the 1st round
  • 2029 Lakers pick - probably won't be great unless Luka falls of a cliff or leaves LA
  • 2030 Warriors pick - top 20(!) protected

I agree. Worst trade ever. But the Mavs did get Flagg. No way they secure that pick in the last draft if they hold onto Luca. So it really netted out to Flagg and three crappy first rounders.

It's definitely a gamble but I don't think it's desperate necessarily. Sometimes you just have to accept some risk to make a deal. Zubac is a really good player and actually fits them perfectly I think.

They are trying to win next year, so basically are saying they'll give that 2026 pick up for Zubac because he's better value in 2026/27 than anyone outside of the top 4 in this draft.

So if you lose the gamble, you have Zubac and no rookie in 2026 but you keep your future asset. If you win the gamble, you have Zubac plus one of the big 4 (Peterson/Dybantsa/Boozer/Wilson) in the 2026 draft. Either way, their roster is looking pretty solid heading into 2026 if Hali's health is good.

Blazers have a keen interest in 2028-2030 picks.

Casual NBA watcher...anyone explain what the T-Wolves accomplished by trading Conley this week...and then after he got traded again was released and the T-Wolves resign him? It sure seems like this was the plan the entire time but why did the T-Wolves do this? Save money? If it was planned...what did the other organizations gain by helping it happen?

The NBA luxury tax aprons get really complex. Basically...
  • T-Wolves threw Conley in a three team trade with the Bulls/Pistons in exchange for cash considerations to move his salary
  • Getting off Conley's salary moved them below the first tax apron - if you're above the 1st apron, you cannot aggregate contracts in a trade
  • By moving under the 1st apron they could aggregate the Rob Dillingham/Leonard Miller contracts to make a trade for Ayo Dosunmu from the Bulls
  • Conley was then a make weight in the Bulls/Hornets trade - Hornets wanted Coby White, but don't need/want Conley so they are releasing him
  • Because Conley got traded again, he's eligible to sign back with the T-Wolves - if he had been released by the Bulls, he couldn't have gone directly back to Minnesota per NBA rules, but since he moved again it is legal
Was it planned? Probably not exactly, but would have been known to be an option. Conley's expiring salary was basically just a chip to facilitate salary matching to make other deals work. So the other teams gained the ability to get other moves done that they wanted to do and Conley was just a cog in facilitating that.

Waived? I would have thought that Sochan had some value left? 22 years old...and fallen out of favor due to the emergence of a younger player? Spurs should have traded him if he had value. Hmmm...seems odd. Or just come out and say "we don't like him" or "he sucks"?

Blake Hinson got time last night for the Jazz.

G League?

Jazz were also fined half a mil for not tanking right.
