Frosts were not highly recruited and were mostly expected to be room depth guys who might develop into quality starters by their junior year. Where they are at as redshirt sophomores was definitely not expected when they signed.I love ISU and ISU wrestling; this program is the best it’s been (minus a few yrs in the late 90s) since coach nicols had it rolling in the 70s.
With that being stated, could KD have done a better job of allocating recruiting resources in the upper weights (‘74-97) to avoid the logjam in the middle weights?
Perhaps some of the athletes in the middle weights progressed more quickly than expected and this logjam was unavoidable?
Example, Casey, Frosts, Ech, PJ have developed better/faster than expected? We all know the Cody addition was not expected.
To me it seems we are really good 33-57/65 right now and the obvious weakness is 65-97.
Again I’m not unhappy with what KD is doing and I fully trust the programs direction and leadership.
The best Paniro ever did in Pennsylvania was 3rd at state and ranked in the 40-60 range. He was a bit more touted, but again turned out to be quite a bit better than his ranking.
Casey committed when he was ranked closer to 100 but shot up the rankings quickly during his senior year (especially after he beat Mendez). He was expected to be a contributor right away.
Ech is a wrestler with so much talent that when he wanted to come to Iowa State, the staff couldn’t turn him away. Best case he becomes a stud, worst case he helps the CRTC train and stays out of trouble in Ames. We have gotten the best case with him.
Overall, I think the staff has pretty much hit on all these guys but some of the heavier recruits ranked a little bit lower haven’t hit like the Frost bros and Paniro have. Pretty good situation to have 133-157, and I know the staff is looking for ways to improve depth at the heavier weights (I think Bartelt has an extreme amount of talent and Herrera has shown flashes at hwt). The future is bright despite this injury filled year
