I know egos play a big role in these coaching decisions but if I'm Lane, I'm getting a better deal to stay at Ole Miss rather than jump to the meat grinder that is LSU or Florida.
Very similar to Matt Campbell at ISU. Why jump to Florida State or Penn State or similar because if you don't win big in the first 3 years, you are fired. You might make a few million less per year but you have some freedom and flexibility to do what you want, how you want rather than make short-term "win now" decisions or be consumed by the meddling boosters at these big schools.
CBS reporting Franklin and PSU negotiated from $49 million down to $9 million for a buyout.
Why?
I can see reaching a settlement but why sign a deal with a 49 mil buyout and then give up 40 mil.
Probably decreased based on his new VT salary and then maybe negotiated to get a lump sum rather than payments.
Every dollar paid to Franklin by V. Tech is one less dollar that Penn State has to pay him not to coach. So it's safe to figure that V Tech contract is for around $40 million. Either way, Franklin is going to get the money.
Nothing earth shattering here but a bit of an update on the Oklahoma State search:

Sources have indicated to FootballScoop that Oklahoma State's pitch to candidates in this cycle has been impressive; the Cowboys' brass are seen per sources as having a better handle, with more resources committed, for the vision for revenue-sharing and NIL than some peers in this coaching cycle such as Arkansas, whom sources told FootballScoop needs to better commit to those components to nail down a hire."

If Lane thinks he can win a NC at Ole Miss then he'll get more money out of them and stay. I think it comes down to that. Coaches are very competitive and maybe Lane feels his best shot at a NC is LSU or Penn State because he can recruit better there.
Arkansas is swimming in money (Walmart, Tyson, JB Hunt). How on earth are they not able to commit big money?
They probably do very well for sponsorships at their stadium. But the real money comes from wealthy individuals who want to win for the sake of winning. A publicly traded company would need to show some kind of ROI to their investors to pump money into a program to pay for coaches and NIL. A wealthy donor doesn’t need to do that as all they want to do is win.
The people behind those Corporations have buckets of money personally if they want to support the Athletic Dept. Aka one of the Walmart daughters is an owner of Denver Broncos.
I would doubt investment in Arkansas basketball would be an impediment. But maybe there is some resistance because the big donors feel this is a never ending cycle where the Universities are coming back to them for more and more keeping getting bigger.
Today they were talking about Oklahoma States coaching search in the Athletic and it stated they can offer a new coach a better overall package, resources and NIL money than Arkansas at this time. OSU has boosters stepping up with cash, while Arkansas does not at this time. Having major companies in your states doesn't do a lot of good unless they are pouring money into the program.
According to the last year I see available 2023-2024 Okie State had 50% more in contributions than Arkie. Apparently a lot of the money isn’t finding it’s way to the athletic department.
I believe Walmart had family members that support MU and were instrumental in their move to the sec, IIRC.
