Drake is a great mid-major job now. Should be interesting to see who they hire.
It's only hampered by how weak the rest of the Valley is currently perceived. Anyone who takes that job has to know they only get to the NCAA tournament through the conference tournament AQ.
I don't know if Overton is ready for the Big12, though I do think he is a good player. I feel like with how much the WVU collective spent this past year, he would get buried in an instant. I think it would be best for him to stay at a mid major and go for the big payday next year. Wright is about the only player I think would be an instant Big12 contributor next year.

I was talking to a friend about him. He could LOVE drake (as Jacobson seems to love UNI)....but a job like this secures A LOT of money if you win...and A LOT of you lose. Boynton got $9.1 million getting fired. I get that Jacobson and even Devries make far more money than most of us as Valley coaches, but Devries is a hot ticket now, gotta cash it.

That's just the thing. DeVries can't wait for any job, if his team is underperforming at that point in time he may not even sniff it anyway. You get to move from the Valley to the Big 12 that's about as good as you can do.

DeVries is a good coach and I assume he'll figure out how to be successful there, especially with their NIL resources. But it's an interesting move for a guy that had spent his entire career in Iowa + Omaha.
Fair point. Though I think we could agree that Drake/Creighton to West Virginia is a bigger geographic and cultural jump than Toledo/Bowling Green/Mount Union to Iowa State.
That being said, looking at Drake's roster, it seems that they had more of a nationwide recruiting approach than a lot of successful mid-majors, so that probably reduces a lot of the concern that you might usually have with a guy who's spent his entire career at two schools.
It's a pretty similar transition they had with the conference change at Creighton that he was in the middle of. League POY coach's kid to help with the first year, experienced roster that he'll bring with him, knows how to manage the increased budget.
I think he'll turn it pretty quick. Probably in the tournament next year.
