Iowa will drive and flail and flop, and they will get whistles for doing so. The athletic advantage rarely matters in Iowa City.

Are people forgetting that we usually get absolutely boatraced in this game in Carver? Like, even our really good teams? Not like 5 - 10 point close losses. But like, catastrophic 20+ losses where we are down by 20 points for huge portions of the game...

I don't think this is really true. Our last "really good team" to go there was in 2014 and we won.

What would you define as "really good?"

The 2022 team finished #29 on Torvik... definitely not a bad team at least...

And got pummeled by 19 in Iowa City when Rebraca kept nailing threes.

I want royalties.

Touche'

I have for some time been calling Momcilovic 'Mom-zilla' which is from one of the Ice Age movies. I thought it was just me but now I have Mrs. Velo doing it so I guess there's that...

Everytime I hear someone call him "Mommy" it makes me squirm.

That may have been one that 14/15 team's most functional games of the season.

That game makes me wonder what would have happened had Fred said "no thanks" to BDJ and rolled with Naz and Matt Thomas at shooting guard and... probably would have been just fine.

BDJ was oozing talent, though. Fred had gotten a good season out of Royce White (and oh my he has been on a journey since...) and DeAndre Kane so what's one more guy to give a second chance?

I think even Hok fans were hitting three's that night.

Meanwhile ISU couldn't get down the court without dribbling off their leg or something.

That team had a tendency to get that way when things went sideways.

Reminds me of the Wayne Morgan era.

One play a guy passes between AN OPPONENT'S LEGS on a fastbreak. All-timer of a play!

Next offensive possession? Throw the ball out of bounds on an inbounds play.

The highs were high but oh my the lows were low.

It was an interesting group for how good they were.

I remember after a hard foul on BDJ once several ISU players gathered around him looking like they were trying to coax him along like preventing something from happening.

That team also had a tendency to just become completely offensively inept for large periods in general. We started out that game down 20-2 because we had one of those instances, making only one basket in the first 9 minutes, with nothing in the first 6. Much like the Pitt game later that year.

We were fairly even with them from that point on, but that wasn't a team that was going to dig out of a 20-point hole, especially on the road

Also, Iowa was the #4 offense on kenpom that year, with a 168 defense. So them getting some points isn't surprising, but our offense stopped itself often enough that year that the bad defense didn't help us much

Our team 2 years ago was a really good team, and it got absolutely smashed in Iowa City.
2012 squad a really good team, smashed in IC.
2016 squad a really good team, smashed in IC.
So yeah, it is factual/true - we typically get our asses kicked over there, hell even dating back to Tinsley's senior year. Don't really care what the specific team tendencies are nor what level of play Iowa is playing at, etc; we just typically do not show up well there.

Freddy's first year was a surprising and fun win. The 2014 win was fantastic (and I think the squad actually benefited from the BDJ distraction, as odd as that sounds).

Actually it happens a lot that players on a team that experiences a loss will each feel that they need to contribute just a little bit more and need to be more locked in.

Iowa has never had quickness, but always manages to get teams in foul trouble. This has been the staple of Franball.
- Have weak, soft players that have the arms of a typical 12 year old
- Flail said gangly limbs into a defender in legal guarding position while not attempting to make an actual basketball play
- Get dumb and incompetent officials to fall for this
- Knock down FTs
The Aaron White offense. Rode that crap to All Big Ten

Aaron White is exactly who I had in mind. Then it became all the rest, save for Garza, who was actually strong enough to try to finish once in a while.

Just a horrible style of play that is an insult to the game. I hate it when players purposely just try to draw fouls without attempting to make a play and refs bail them out.

White was a put-back machine until they learned you could stop him by boxing out. Then it became 3 dribble steps across the lane, lower shoulder into the opponent and flail arms for a shooting foul. It was ********. It was 3 dribble steps because if he tried 4, he would lose the ball. And made all conference.

To be fair Gilbert was a lot closer to driving into contact without having a real chance of making the shot and hoping for the foul last year. This year he drives in craving contact but makes all manner of ridiculous shots whether he gets the whistle or not. He is an amazing player around the rim.

To me it looks like he put some time in to keep the body in control and finish through for the look to the hoop.

He's up there with Kane and Tinsely for finishing. Kane was kind of a bull that could soften the touch and Tinsley was a wizard at creating space in traffic.

Yeah it is clear he put in a lot of work on it. His body control and ability to finish with arm extended to the side to keep the ball away from defenders as well as waiting in the air to release the ball are all next level.
