He should know that him taking 3's isn't going to help us if he's making 24% of them. He was consistent though. Consistently bad. With a couple outlier games.
There were multiple big games we wouldn’t have won without him going off. He was wildly inconsistent though, which wasn’t great for sure and frustrating for everyone (including him I’m sure). Maybe another offseason can help his game. His midrange attack the middle of the paint was nice in the tourney.

You can't just say "oh well when he played well he was great!" He truly had a horrific season offensively. Just perusing the B12 he sticks out as an outlier in regards to minutes played, his usage, and his inefficiency. He had easily the worst PER among B12 players who were above like 8th in their team's rotation. Gabe was one of only a handful of players in the conference with negative OWS and "led" that category by a fairly wide margin. Among players in the conference who started more than one game (senior night in those cases), only

came close to matching Gabe's ORtg. Cottrell is a center for WV that shot 34% from the field, averaged more turnovers than assists, and funny enough shot better from 3 than Gabe.

I understand what Gabe brings on defense. But the idea that he was just "inconsistent" is wrong. He has blow up games very infrequently but absolutely hurts you on offense in basically every other game. There's realistically no excuse for it if Gabe is asked to have a similar role offensively next year.

I would imagine there's no way TJ is oblivious to Gabe's struggles offensively. And he has to know that he can't rely on Gabe to replace a bulk of Brockington's production.

You can keep bringing up Gabe's struggles this last season, but you can't use it against TJ. I'm sure TJ went into the season thinking Gabe could be more efficient and productive than he was. However, by the time he really struggled in the Big 12, it was too late to change anything major.

Plus, when you're trying to set a new culture of defense, intensity, and teamwork, I'm guessing it's pretty hard to sit a guy that is the best defender on the team, and by all accounts did everything that was asked of him by the staff.

I'm guessing he knew exactly what he had.

Reading some of these posts, you'd think TJ won about ten games and didn't even whiff making the NIT.
I worked in manufacturing for 37 years / most in management. I have always said I was glad thousands of people did not view and critique every decision I made. So far, I think TJ is an excellent coach and I expect he will have a great career at ISU. As he increases our talent level, I am very excited about the future. I think we won a lot of games this year over teams with greater perceived “talent.” He makes decisions that he believes gives us the best chance to win. I am a big fan!

This is a good analysis. People remembering the great games of Gabe are working hard to forget the 5 absolutely atrocious ones that preceded it.

Basile....VanDerPlas.... first one to take the leap and commit gets the schollie? No info on which one is more interested , but assume we don't take both. I just hope we get one of the two!
Still haven't heard if Michael Jones from Davidson has committed anywhere. He was high on my list. But wouldn't mind the Illinois transfer from Wisc w/years to build upon.

The fact that we aren't hearing more about targeting any and all scoring combo guards to replace Brockington should tell you that we are awaiting a decision from AJ Green. No other explanation

I agree, I hope there isn’t as much pressure on him to score next year or he can changup his game to be more consistent. I was just pointing out there were multiple high profile games where he was the difference for us. Others where he struggled to dribble or make a layup. Even when he struggled he was good defensively which is something very positive to be said of him. I’m fine with being critical, just bothered by the near hate a few have.

Ben Vander Plas's has the game of a point forward, right?

Is he athletic enough to play the 4?
I don’t see point forward game, but he’s athletic enough to play the 4. Any 4 that would give him trouble is likely giving most 4s trouble, or are small ball 4s.

At 6’8” 230/240 and with his shooting, he teams very well with a guy like Ward and helping our guards on offense

Just looking at numbers and limited highlights, it looks like Vander Plas would be a 4, or maybe 3, but never the 5. And Basile could be a 4 or 5, but never a 3.

I know some on here hate assigning positional numbers, but when we're talking about players we've never seen play regularly, it's a universal scale that gives an idea of what type of player we're talking about.
