2016 Rio Summer Olympics

Guy in my office just said Phelps wasn't a great athlete because, unlike Jordan Gretzky and Pele, defenses weren't designed to stop him.

I just ...can't

that comes from an article posted today saying he's the greatest Olympian ever but not the greatest athlete. and the article makes a lot of sense because he has no one game-planning to stop him. he doesn't have to contend with defenses and change his strategy to swim fast. every pool is the same.

I have not read a single post of this thread, so forgive me if this has been talked about already...
but we (the U.S.) are being booed relentlessly in every single sport I've watched. I know it doesn't really matter all that much, but I can't believe how bad it is.
The only booing I've heard is for bad scores and/or when Russian athletes are introduced. What sports are you watching?

as to the sexist athlete topic - the absolute proof is in volleyball uniforms.

women wear the tightest/shortest pants possible and claim it's to help them play better yet the men, who play the same sport, wear more normal athletic shorts. if there was a true athletic advantage to tight/short spandex the men would wear the same thing (just like they do in swimming and wrestling and water polo and diving, etc). it's all to show off women's bodies and the women themselves condone it.

Apples and oranges. He also doesn't have a lot of guys around him protecting him from said defenses.

Every NHL hockey rink is the same; every NBA court is the same; every FIFA pitch is mostly the same.

You have some arguments, but that isn't one of them.

So, like UNI playing KU in the NCAA's? ;)
Yeah - if it was a strategy and it worked...bully for them, frustrating for the US team. If the refs(?) umps(?) center (whoever that is) were complicit in allowing a style that bent the rules, then the beef should be with the refs...(WVU vs the rest of the BIG12)
Center referee vs. the Assistant referees (with flags on the sidelines).

Mostly VB, both sand and hardcourt, both men and women, every time we had the ball to serve. Then I noticed it in soccer today every time Hope had the ball. Our women's Judo gold medal winner was booed in every match? as well.

Is it like Europe and whistling is booing? Heard a lot of whistling directed at Phelps, maybe mostly when there was a Brazil guy in the pool too. Some at tennis too.

I've been watching the beach volley ball for both men & women, and haven't noticed it. Haven't watched the other events.

Yeah, I found the article while he was trying to argue, and realized that he was trying to regurgitate a stupid argument and present it as his own.

Saying he isn't THE greatest athlete is one thing. Saying he's not A great athlete is just dumb. Not all great athletes play in contact sports. Dumb dumb dumb argument.

The contrast is even more stark in beach VB. The men are wearing fairly loose fitting tank tops and nearly knee length shorts. There probably isn't enough fabric in what the women VB players are wearing to consider it a uniform. But, I suppose some sexist man is behind the whole WVB "uniform" and making them expose themselves.

Except the women are not required to wear bikinis anymore. That is their choice.

The gymnastic outfits make me both laugh and cringe. You have teenage girls out there with their butts exposed and long sleeves, wth? Some male gymnast caught holy hell for putting an old picture of Carly Patterson's behind up on Twitter from when she was only 16 and referring to it as one of the advantages of his sport. I'm not exactly sure why the uproar because the photo was out there and it was also on TV for the whole world to see. Then you have fully clothed male gymnasts but they don't need long sleeves.

Track & field will be another one, with women looking like they are in bikinis practically and men in full body suits practically.

Not sure if the gymnasts choose the outfits, sometimes they don't seem too far from child porn, but the beach volleyball ones are probably cashing in. It is how they get men to watch women's sports.

Hope Solo isn't a very good loser.

"We lost to a bunch of cowards. The better team did not win."

What an athlete wears is frequently dictated by their sponsors...and they are less interested in nearly naked men than they are in nearly naked women.
