2016 Rio Summer Olympics

I think we can all agree that the NBC plan of covering the Olympics is doing nobody any favors. The sorority party Today Show tactic is setting back recognition of women as serious journalists and equals decades.
Amen to that.

If I could dropkick Hoda & Meredith into a parallel dimension, I would happily do so. I really REALLY don't care what wine goes best with soccer or if it's possible to finish a whole bottle in the time it takes Michael Phelps to win another gold medal.

Guy in my office just said Phelps wasn't a great athlete because, unlike Jordan Gretzky and Pele, defenses weren't designed to stop him.

I just ...can't

I don't understand enough about soccer to understand why she called them cowards, so I can't respond to her lack of sportsmanship. By that, I mean - I supported the rants Rhoads & Pollard made because I felt they were justified in their post-game comments. Did Hope have a valid point, or was she just mad because they lost to a different style of play that they couldn't counter?

I think in general nobody should give a **** what Hope Solo says. Sweden played defensively for most of the game, but that's certainly a valid strategy.

If you are an overmatched team you may sit back defensively and not risk anything hoping to keep the other team from scoring. By keeping the score low you keep in the game and still have a chance. I think Solo is an idiot to call this cowardly and she is giving her team and the US a bad name by doing so. If you have a weakness, you strategize around that weakness. It is the same throughout sports. Shake the other team's hands and congratulate them for executing their strategy. I think this has more to do with a personal conflict between Solo and the Swedish coach.

I didn't see the game so I can't comment on whether their physical play was out of line. If it was, she should be upset with the center for letting it go on rather than with the Swedes. Sometimes a slower team will push and shove to slow down a speedier team; willing to take the fouls rather than give up scoring opportunities. Keeping the game ugly without a flow generally keeps a more talented team from getting in a flow. If it was out of hand, the center should have started to dole out yellow and even red cards to bring it in line. I don't know if it was.

I have not read a single post of this thread, so forgive me if this has been talked about already...
but we (the U.S.) are being booed relentlessly in every single sport I've watched. I know it doesn't really matter all that much, but I can't believe how bad it is.

On Hope Solo, she couldn't be deflecting any more if she was a Hawk fan posting in a thread about their using the MSU game as an excuse for laying a dump in the Rose Bowl and bringing up anything and everything about ISU sports instead.

So, like UNI playing KU in the NCAA's? ;)
Yeah - if it was a strategy and it worked...bully for them, frustrating for the US team. If the refs(?) umps(?) center (whoever that is) were complicit in allowing a style that bent the rules, then the beef should be with the refs...(WVU vs the rest of the BIG12)
