2016 Rio Summer Olympics

Right now I think you're just arguing for the sake of arguing. That's a YOU problem.

i asked why they all don't do the same routine. a few people answered and most implied i was dumb for asking. how are people supposed to learn about the sport when they are criticized for asking basic questions. Asking a question doesn't automatically imply the asker is being passive aggressive.

They don't all do the same thing because that would be boring.

Allowing better gymnasts to do more difficult routines challenges the entire field of gymnasts.

It can't be scored the same way basketball is because it's a different sport. Period.

an injustice to her? the USA women's basketball team destroy's everyone they play yet they all play in the same bracket.

Now that I think about it - why are there sop many similar track/swimming events but only one team event? Why not separate events for penalty kicks, one half of play, a full game, etc? seems kind of unfair that phelps can win 8 medals in one games while a soccer player can only win one.

If that was your intent, you probably shouldn't have started off with the first quote.

And this is where this argument should end. No more needs to be said.

Is it that hard to understand that harder routines start with a higher score? If everyone had the same routine it would take away from the very best to show that they are the very best, and level the playing field, IMO.

Yeah, it's subjective, but idk how else you can actually do it. It would be subjective if they all had the same routine too.

Take a break from your terrible argument and just enjoy the games, especially the women's gymnastics team - they are amazing!

seriously, major overthinking going on. Just enjoy. As someone else mentioned, there is a very real possibility that the US women gymnasts will take home every gold. That has to be almost unprecedented. I have no idea how scoring works for some of the other sports - fencing and diving (other than "don't make a big splash), for example. But I still enjoy watching them.

We watched rugby yesterday, and spent half of the time arguing over what we thought the rules must be. It was VERY entertaining. :)

There are many sports that I don't understand the intricacies to but still enjoy watching just because I can appreciate the hard work that people put into them. Not a huge gymanstics or diving guy but the stuff the do is insane. Plus I like watching America beat the rest of the world :) Plus most of the those sports I am only watching once every 4 years so it isn't like I get to see them much.

So you're telling me that I've been diving wrong all these years? This is ******** of the highest order.

On a side note, googling how scoring works in the various events is probably more beneficial than attempting to tell people that enjoy the event how you think it should be scored. I say this as someone who generally likes explaining wrestling scoring to people, but when someone says something like "why can't these guys use their legs? They should be able to use their legs in Greco-Roman," and the answer is going to be "because it's a different style. Get over it," don't be surprised if someone responds unfavorably.

Apparently track doesn't start til Friday

Yep. About the only things I probably care about watching on the actual main NBC are swimming week one and track mostly week two. I like the less hyped sports on the other channels though. About the only time I watch things like taekwondo, shooting, archery, etc.

how can they sweep if only two per country are allowed to move on?

Well they can't sweep all three medals in the all around, because they can only have 2 gymnasts from the US in the finals.

But they'll come close to winning all of the medals.

Anyone know if this years team is just incredibly good, or if the competition is worse this year?

Please note that I said they have a good chance to sweep all the GOLDs. In other words they could come in first place, in team all around, individual all around, vault, uneven bars, floor and beam. Which would be historical, not sure it has been done before, but if it has to tie it would put the girls on another level.

Do they still do intramural water polo at Iowa State? Watching that reminds me of how exhausting it was.

Every time I thought I had it figured out they did something I figured would have been illegal. Fun to watch, but I gave in to the fact I had no idea what was going on.

And you had an innertube. Can't imagine how difficult it is treading water for an entire game.
There are different ways to tread water, so you can switch out...but not easily.

And for those folks who laugh at the synchronized swimmers - try doing a gymnastics routine while holding your breath. ;)
