2016 Rio Summer Olympics

Not going to read the previous 17 pages but... let's insert a conversation about Shooting and why there needs to be a billion different medal events. Do we really need 15 different gold medals given out for shooting? 45 Medals handed out for that seems ridiculous. Talk about a sport where we should be able to combine and get more overall quality. Instead of giving China 10 Gold, 5 silver and 15 bronze every Olympic games.

The new method of showing the score is an improvement, IMO...but there are times when I really wish they would list the actual deductions. I wonder if the athletes get that info, so that they know what to improve on for the next event?

I think a lot of them know what the did wrong. Like when the US gymnast avoided a deduction by NOT touching the bar last night.

and the US women's basketball team is allowed to use their full skill set, right? They aren't told well it's really hard for Lithuania to shoot the 3, so you don't get to do that anymore. Or you can't use this type of play because the other team hasn't mastered it yet.

what are you arguing for/against? i said *I* don't like gymnastics because *I* prefer quantitative measurements. Phelps and the worst swimmers all do the same thing to see who does it faster/better. each person likes what they like and its not better or worse than someone else. I don't like gymnastics because there is no visible scoring system and for people who watch it once every four years the intricacies are not obvious. An example would be rugby - even for a non-fan it is easy to see which team is better. Yet the scoring is the same for everyone. New Zealand doesn't start with a higher ceiling because they have better players or better moves?

That Phelps turn was amazing, he reminded everyone how good he is when he did that. Great swim from everyone on that relay.

Ledecky is crazy good, amazing performance last night.

US women's gymnastics is crazy good. They have a legitimate chance to sweep all the golds of the women's competition, which would of course be completely awesome.

Well they can't sweep all three medals in the all around, because they can only have 2 gymnasts from the US in the finals.

But they'll come close to winning all of the medals.

Anyone know if this years team is just incredibly good, or if the competition is worse this year?

EDIT: My bad, you said sweep golds. Carry on.

The cross country horse jumping course is really pretty. Looks like my favorite venue. Not sure exactly where it is at, must be a ways out of the city.

I'm arguing that your idea of making them all do the same routine because the scoring is too complex for you is dumb.

Except the swimmers are NOT doing the same thing every time, just the same as the sprinters & distance runners and relay & medley runners aren't doing the same thing every time. The strategy of a 100m freestyle or dash is wholly different from the 200m, 400m 800m and 1500m run or freestyle.

I don't think they get the gold without that turn by Phelps. And Ledecky's main competition was herself, kept watching that world record line.

I also like the smack coming from the pool about the cheating Russians lol.

pretty sure every swimmer in the pool for the 4x100 relay was swimming. the US team doesn't "start" with more point because phelps is a better swimmer. every country and participant does the same exact thing.

how can they sweep if only two per country are allowed to move on?

You made a comment of something along the lines of "why don't they all do the same thing" that is why everyone is telling you why they don't do the same things. And in basketball they all play on the same court no different to gymnastics that the beam, uneven bars, floor and vault are all the same size for everyone. It is just that Simone can fly higher than anyone else off a vault, just like Phelps can come off a wall better than anyone else. They don't' limit Phelps to only being under water for 10 feet off the wall. They let him come off, and he is superior to every one at that. Just like the US gymnasts are superior at doing more flips, spins, transfers and whatever all else they do in gymnastics.

What you don't like is the fact they are judged, well even if they all do the same routine, which would be really boring for everyone, they would still need to be judged. I suppose they could just see measure how high they jump spin and flip, but there is a lot more to it than that.

Right now I think you're just arguing for the sake of arguing. That's a YOU problem.

The Rag must have decided their sports page needed to cover something besides da Hawks cause they have a front page article about Gabby haters. Moar drama.

Is it that hard to understand that harder routines start with a higher score? If everyone had the same routine it would take away from the very best to show that they are the very best, and level the playing field, IMO.

Yeah, it's subjective, but idk how else you can actually do it. It would be subjective if they all had the same routine too.

Take a break from your terrible argument and just enjoy the games, especially the women's gymnastics team - they are amazing!
