2016 Rio Summer Olympics

On the tape delay issue, nearly anything I care about I have watched online. Stick the laptop in the kitchen and watch while I make salsa with all of these tomatoes.

I saw a review of the opening ceremonies (I never watch those) that said the ceremonies themselves were great but NBC was epic fail. We were apparently the only country with a multiple hour delay so NBS could add "context," which the article interpreted as multiple NBC efforts at hyping women's gymnastics.

Watched men's All Around tonight. I knew in about the first 5 minutes who won the medals because NBC was so intent on setting up the story that they pretty much gave it away by who they chose to cover. It would be better if no one gave them the last pages of the script before they started designing their coverage.

ESPN has no responsibility to protect NBC's asset. I'm sure they enjoy spoiling what NBC overspent to buy. I would steer clear of ESPN if I didn't want a spoiler.

This whole "Gabby Douglas has offended everyone in America because she's not covering her heart during the National Anthem nor is she standing at attention like she's claiming to be" has to be one of the worst made-up conspiracies ever. Cue Peter Griffin: "OMG Who the hell cares?!?!" Apparently those people who are being even more disrespectful in their critique of Gabby over this non-issue than Gabby ever was on the medal stand.

In London it was her hair.
IMO - the athletes are under no obligation to sing, salute, or stand at attention, although on a world stage it would be preferable if they acknowledge the anthem and the flag. How they do it is their own choice, and I saw nothing wrong with her choice.. It's a very emotional, proud moment for them, and they react in different ways. It's a very long song to stand up there and not move at all, especially shortly after a hard-fought competition.

This "scandal" will be forgotten in less than a week. Some Olympic images become a part of history, scandalous at the time - memorable for all time:

Apparently they at least showed Gabby Douglas on the medal stand. A couple of times I wanted to see the swimming relay teams on the medal stand and they don't show those, cause they cut away to the tape delayed gymnastics. I also can't tell anything the pool announcer is saying when he gets excited and starts screaming. I finally switched from watching the live swimming that was on NBC to watching online. They have announcers with some British accents that don't scream over anything and they show the medal ceremonies.

If they are going to give Gabby **** about not putting her hand over her heart, then why not give Phelps crap about giving himself a breast massage during the anthem. Dude, that isn't where you are supposed to put your hand; it goes several inches higher." That and his laughing fit during the anthem.

Both this and Gabby's are non-issues.

Agree...
They are very exposed on that platform...and in a hyper-emotional state, most of the time. I suggest we cut them some slack.

I wonder how many times the Inigo Montoya line gets uttered during fencing practice. Or is it just a tired old joke to them?

Watching all these Gymnastics highlights each night as the US dominate in Women's events got me thinking back to the past. So I came up with a quiz to see how well you all can remember some of the former greats in U.S. Women's Gymnastics. Click here to take quiz.

Lol 2 out of 10. Good thing MLR and Shawn Johnson were in there or I would have been skunked. Granted I don't follow women's gymnastics, but you would think with a one out of four guess, I would have gotten a few more.

I seriously am shocked that I got all of those right. On about half of them I would look at the picture and think she looks familiar but I have no idea what her name is, but when I saw the list of names I absolutely knew which one it was. I wonder what important information I learned in school was pushed out to make room for this useless information.

You'll figure it out tomorrow morning when you're staring blankly at your untied shoes.
