2011 wbb recruits?

You are overrating the athleticism of these players to think they would be successful pressing full court.

QUOTE]

You argue against a defensive scheme by citing their offensive limitations. I think this team has exceptional defense - fortunately, because of the offensive limitations. BF has noted in the past that pressing takes energy and I suspect he doesn't think he has the depth this year for that, but, occassionally, maybe.

I have no problem with this team's half-court defense for the most part, it's one of BF's best ever. But I don't think he has the athletes and depth to press fullcourt unless an end-of-game situation calls for it.

I don't think athleticism is the determining factor; perhaps depth is. I do think it's more of a coach's philosophy.
Example: Green Bay used a 3/4 court, zone press against both Virginia and ISU in the NCAA's last year, yet both UVa and ISU had more athletes than they did. UWGB beat Virgina and really should have beat us.
South Dakota State full-court pressed Baylor two years ago in the NCAA's, and barely lost the game, 60-58. I doubt SDSU had an "athlete" who could even play for Baylor, much less start for them.

I agree with your statement that depth matters more than athletes. However, the single biggest reason UWGB almost beat ISU was that Lacey was completely gassed, no surprise since she was playing her 2nd game in 3 days after taking three weeks off from almost all physical activity due to pneumonia

That may be true, although GB's defense on Bolte was also impressive. Anyway, my purpose was to agree with TWB, and point out that teams with less athleticism than our ISU team still choose to play pressure defense - full court, 3/4 court. or half court. It has much more to do with with a coach's philosophy than the talent on hand, IMO.

I can't imagine BF pressing, except when he has matchups or surprise on his side. What I wonder about is the future of the zone. Other (esp. Big 12) teams are better prepared for our switching man than they ever could be for our dynamic zone. I hope we at least become closer to 50/50, because when we have needed to zone, I don't think we have been as good as years past.

Back to recruits, is Iowa class of 2012 as far below average as class of 2011 is above average? I think he was trying to get us ready at coach's lunch for 2 years of little or no in-state signees.

I have heard a few coaches say that in general 2012 and 2013 classes are as deep/rich with talent as 2011 on a National level.

At Hilton Bolte and Lacey both struggled in that game with terrible shooting. It was parts UWGB defense, UWGB good shooting and poor shooting by our two stars. I will never sell UWGB short as they have savvy motivated players players and Matt Bollant is a super coach.

Don't know if we'll meet UWGB this year in the NCAA, but hope not. They return everyone from last year and are 17th AP and 14th in the Coaches Poll. However the NCAA Selection Committee can sometimes make rematches happen.

At 25-1 with a loss to Marguette, they are having a whale of season and should make a run. It may be a long ways off for Bill but as a successor Bollant, being about 12 years younger with knowledge of the Midwest, may be one guy to look at.

thanks for the link Royal. Her size/build looks pretty good. Isn't Bree going to Missouri?

Fowler is headed to MU and they say that Preston is D1 material too.

Bingley looked very good last nite (had 2 outstanding highlight reel plays) but didn't score in the 2nd half. She has great floor vision and handles very well.
I never saw her use her left hand though.
Has a nice shot

For KC area Cyclones, Williamson will be playing at 4:45 on Wednesday at the Independence Events Center against Liberty. This should be a good game.

Lee's Summit West and 2012 target, Emiah Bingley, will be taking on Blue Springs at 8:15. This could be a blowout for Blue Springs.
