2004: Altman to ISU?

I'm with those who think Altman could do a pretty good job at a BCS school if he ever wanted to go there. The Kansas State job was what, ten, fifteen years ago? You don't think the guy has improved as a coach since then? Besides, basketball at K-State was definitely a second fiddle to football down there up until the day they hired Bob Huggins.

Past performance is often an indicator of future success, and going by the numbers, Altman could be a h@ll of a catch.
 
I think that if Altman is named coach at Iowa, he will do allright there. He is a good coach.

The second thing that we will hear, after we really got our first choice, is about how he owned McDermott when they were in the Valley, which is true.
 
Just for the record, Wayne was hired in 2003, so I'm not sure what the opening could have been.
 
I believe we were actually turned down by the Wyoming coach, Steve McClain, in 2003, when we settled on Wayne Morgan. McClain was courted and, in a declarative statement, said publicly that he didn't want the ISU job.

He was fired at the end of this season (2006-07) at Wyoming. If you want to be happy about a coach we didn't get, this is the one.

Schroyer replaces Steve McClain, who was fired earlier this month after going 157-115 in nine seasons. McClain led Wyoming to four postseason bids in his first five seasons, and in 2002 coached the Cowboys to their first NCAA tournament win since 1990.
But McClain's last four seasons were mediocre - Wyoming went a combined 57-63 in those seasons, with two losing records and no postseason bids. Burman cited on-the-court losses and slumping ticket sales when he fired McClain.

Altman did issue a statement that he was NOT interested in the ISU job a few years ago. Don't get me wrong, I am not defending Bruce because the search for a coach was horrible. I don't think Altman was a possibility.

Here are some interesting facts:

The coach with the best record, Duke University 's Mike Krzyzewski, is not the highest paid. Both Marquette coach Tom Crean and Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings earn more from their respective universities.
The greatest gap between performance and pay seems to be at Northwestern University , where Bill Carmody's annual compensation of $1.1 million lands him at number four on the list despite amassing only 95 wins and 111 losses in seven seasons as head coach.
While John Thompson, III earns $449,054 as head coach at Georgetown, his father, former head coach John Thompson, Jr., earns $412,121 as "Special Assistant to the President" at Georgetown.
In what can be seen as a victory for Title IX, while Baylor University men's basketball coach Scott Drew is number ten on the list with a salary of $413,612, Baylor women's basketball head coach Kim Mulkey earns quite a bit more, with an annual salary of $654,290 in the most recent fiscal year.

After all that has happened with Marty & Miller over the last few months, why would anybody take what they say with a grain on salt? The few times I've listened to them they have had a ax to grind with ISU and Jamie Pollard.

Right, Altman at Iowa is bad for ISU. He freekin' owned GMac when Northern Iowa and Creighton went head to head. :no6xn:
 
No coach is ever, EVER interested in a job they didn't get.

Show me a coach who publicly stated "man, I really wanted that job, but didn't get it."
 
I would place Miller's statement in the bull**** category.
If Altman was willing to leave Creighton for ISU, why has he not agressively pursued or taken any other opening since then. There have been numerous high profile coaching jobs open up in the past 4 years, some with better programs or more money than ISU.
 
Per a "Confidential Trusted Source" (My accountant's wife gets her hair cut by the mother of one of Dana Altman's assistant coaches.) Dana Altman will be next coach at EIU.
 
I don't understand why Altman would be interested in the EIU job. From what I can tell, that would be a huge step down for Altman.... sort of like moving from EIU to New Mexico.

Creighton has been a contender year in and year out in a conference that is gaining more and more respect each season. They are playing in a brand new state of the art arena which they are doing a good job of filling. Omaha, while not the most glamorous of cities, has more going on than Iowa City. Basketball is the thing at Creighton, they don't play football. Creighton basketball is also the big thing down the road at University of Nebraska during the winter months, the Huskers don't really play basketball.

Why trade that for the disaster that is the EIU position?: A school that cares more about football, has an overinflated view of itself in the grand scheme of college basketball, and will drive out coaches that don't meet the unrealistic standards held by the fans.
 
Ken McKenna sure jumped fast at the Indiana State head coach job today. He was the assistant to Dana Altman. A move is affoot?

It is interEsting that Kirk Ferentz can make $3M a year with 6 wins and the highest paid bball coach who can win 30 makes $1.7M. Guess bball is only half as important monetarily as football.


Dana lost 3 seniors this year - the BigThree. Lots of questionmarks for next year. Can have those qmarks just as well at EIU.
