12/17 Official Coaching Search Thread

Whats this obession with cold climate coaches. One of our games this year I would consider cold weather. I refuse to believe that weather has a factor in any coaches choice.

Because it has a HELL of a lot to do with recruiting.

Well, they do have to live here year round... But I guess thats why Mac had a second home in Sarasota...

Wife being from Ames could actually be a good reason for him to consider it over comparable jobs like Minnesota. GP would be a fantastic hire - probably the best possible scenario.

But does she still have family in Ames? That is what matters. Built in babysitters?

Because Gene made it pretty clear he liked the south better than the north, didn't like the cold, etc. and so on. I think some guys just have a knack for living up here, and some don't. This is their home, and if they're making bowls every year, they're ENTRENCHED up here from may until februrary EVERY YEAR... it gets dang cold in nov, dec, jan, and feb.

Based on what, their thoughts of who would take the job or a list of 4 that JP gave them? It's all conjecture at this point. Or at least that's what I'm hoping.

Farleys the one because he likes doing donuts at the Jack, like he was doing yesterday. That was our selling point for him. He has more room to maneuver.

I've noticed a lot of people have been saying they aren't impressed with ESPN's list (Loney, Farley, Norvell, and Graham) except for Graham. I know about Loney & Farley, but what do people have against Norvell? I'm just curious & have no strong opinion on him either way.

Farley won't come unless we build a dome over Jack Trice. Just kidding.

The best part of the search last year was message boards (mainly this one) snowballed the "Ditka to ISU" rumor and it made its way up the chain until a media outlet actually asked Ditka about the job!

Is he still available this year? He would be able to get recruits from the Chicago mafia. His buddy Singletary is doing pretty good.

Dudes...no one's wife is from Ames.

Can we get this as part of the forum guidelines somewhere? :policeman:

That's hilarious. Ya, and even if some chick was from Ames, what makes you think she's in a big hurry to get back here?

That would have 0% impact on our search. JP would be a fool to even bring that up. "Hey, I know the Mrs. is from Ames."

He was mentioned a lot both times at nebraska, but he was always an also ran.

Maybe it was, but most people HATED his offenses for the majority of his first stint here at Iowa State. But yet fans seem to have forgotten that and are now clamoring for him to come back and head coach us - I don't think so.
You are right, those offences with the Davis Brother's really sucked! ...and it didn't get much better with Sage & Seneca (Jr Year) at QB. Let's move on!

First, I didn't realize Loney was instrumental in the Davis' brothers decision to come to Iowa State - silly me... :jimlad:

Second, just how much coaching "genius" does it take to give the best RB in the land the ball and to tell him to run forward with it? My guess is I could have made a couple hundred gr a year doing that and I would be viewed as "quite successful" by many on this board.

Third, the fact that the Davis brothers were as great as they were here in spite of questionable offensive lines and the defense stacking the box because we weren't a credible threat to pass is more credit to the Davis brothers' abilities more than it was Loney's abilities to coach.

Fourth, as great as the Davis brothers were here at ISU, just how much of an impact did those offenses have at winning games? Based on the stats, we averaged 19.4 points per game in 1997, 20.1 points per game in 1998, and 22.5 points per game in 1999. For comparison's sake, this team averaged 25.3 points per game this year, and most people on this site would consider McFarland a less than average offensive coordinator.

Fifth, yes, the offense looked great the first half of 2002 when Seneca Wallace & co. ran all over those teams. Then we ran into the teeth of the schedule, playing "real" defenses that knew exactly what play was going to be called before it came into the sidelines, basically rendering Wallace & Co. useless the second half of the season

Sixth, the whole thing of Loney leaving Iowa State twice using the excuse of "broadening the resume" or "I'll never get a chance here" to me more screams of Chizik's line "I left here a couple of years ago so I would be able to come back home at a later date."

But yeah, despite all these things, Loney would be a GREAT hire for head coach here at Iowa State... :jimlad:
