Just throwing this name out there, not sure what people would think.....Gary Crowton, OC LSU

-Not a young up and comer but def has experience.

-Had two head coaching stints at La Tech and BYU (conference coach of the year his first year 10-2 record)

-Been the OC for LSU, Oregon, and before that the Chicago Bears where his offenses always put up points

-Would instantly upgrade our offense

-Not sure what happened at the end of his BYU stint. He was there for 4 yrs, dont know if he quit or was fired

Prob not what were looking for but I thought it was an interesting name

Dumb statement of the day. If it's working keep using it. Explain why not.

Its an early season game against a weak opponent. You are going to have to throw the ball later in the year, shouldn't you get some expereince doing it in game situations?

#1 Loney was doing Drake a favor by filling in as coach because he is good friends with the AD. He didn't bring in any of the players. He did this because he was still being paid by Arizona and did it for VERY little money.

"During Loney’s four seasons in Minnesota, the Vikings led the NFL in total offense in 2003 and set a team record for yardage in 2004. The Vikings led the NFL in rushing in 2002. Quarterback Dante Culpepper broke virtually every Vikings’ passing record in 2004 and posted the fourth-best passer rating in NFL history."

During his third stay with the Cyclones, Loney’s offense produced back-to-back bowl seasons in 2000 and 2001. Loney was assistant head coach and wide receivers coach at Connecticut in 1994 and assistant offensive line coach for the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals in 1993. From 1989-92 he was the assistant head coach/offensive line coach under Earle Bruce at Colorado State. He helped lead the Rams to the school’s first bowl appearance in 48 year"

I thought it was interesting that his poll about who the next ISU coach should be went like this:

I heard that our big donors got together last night and came up with the money to hire Ferentz.

I, for one, don't want to see stoops here. I don't think he will be able to do anything at ISU and I don't think he's that good of a recruiter.

my concern with Loney is that his name will not fire up the fan base. I'll end up supporting whoever his hired - hard not to really.

I'm with you. Some people just want the name and the flavor o' the day. Nobody will ever convince them about Loney. I certainly think he has the ability to be a fine head coach.

I'm more concerned about winning. Chizik fired up the fan base and look how that worked out. Steve Alford fired up the fan base and look how that worked out. On the other hand, everyone in Iowa about cried when they hired Ferentz.

I don;t know that Loney is the right coach for this team but I do get a little sick of the whole "hire a big name to excite the fan base". How exciting was it to end the year with 2 wins? I'll take a good coach any day over some "big name".

for me as a ticket holder...it's not about the 'big name'.

it's about the best coach.

he is not the best coach out there by far....for every positive on his resume...there are plenty of lumps of coal.

just look at his terrific o-line this year in the NFL.

(and it's not like their fans to turn against a Provo born and raised guy) He's a very good coordinator, but struggled mightily running a program.

His first year at BYU he did go 12-2 with LaVell Edwards' team. He then followed that with 5-7, 4-8, 5-6 seasons. Now look where BYU is at with a new coach (Crowton's DC in fact) 6-6, 11-2, 11-2, 10-2.

Why are we not mentioning Steve Loney. Did we forget that ISU is this guy's dream job? As a lifelong Cyclone, after Chiz tearing us down, bring back the O-line/Off. Coordinator from '95-'97 and '00-'01 is comforting. He coached the line and offense that saw two spectacular seasons with Troy Davis in the backfield. Loney played here, coached under McCarney, loves Ames, loves the University, and knows how to coach a line. With some headcoaching experience (albeit not great). He's been in the NFL and has connections there which can help recruiting. Doesn't the guy who's fairly qualified and holds ISU as his "DREAM JOB" deserve at least a phone call?

If it's Loney, I will turn in my ISU football fan card. He has left Iowa State not once...but TWICE. I get that it's his dream job, but at close to 60, he is such a bad choice for so many reasons.

What makes you think Patterson, Whittingham, or Peterson would come here? Lets be logical. That will not happen. Each one of those coaches have a better chance at BCS bowls in their respective conferences then here. That's just a fact.

Probably because I know a little something about the guy. I don't make statements like "look at his O-line" without having a clue what I'm talking about. Have you been following the rams this year? Did you follow them this year? Do you know anything about their line? Do you realize that he replaced a fired coach this year? Do you realize that a couple of weeks ago they were playing a RB that was bagging groceries 5 days before he started on Sunday?

I look at what he did with ISU's offense while he was here and I think it's impressive. I guess you don't and that's fine. Like I said, I don't know if he's the right person for the job but slamming an ISU alum that has done a lot of positive things for the college is wrong IMO. Yes, I think he's a viable OPTION.

For every coach you list I can give you something that looks like a negative on the surface but unless you know the whole siuation you(or I) really don't have a clue.
