12/17 Official Coaching Search Thread

Paul Chryst. What does anyone know about him? I did a google search on him and he has a pretty good resume. We know Pollard has Wisconsin ties. Didn't somone say a plane went to Wisconsin from Ames the other day?

I played football at drake 4 years. My senior year was Loney's year at Drake. Trust me that we do not want him as our head coach. I'm sure he was partially "mailing it in" at Drake for that year but we VASTLY underachieved that year. After upsetting Ill St. (a ranked 1aa scholarship school) in the opening game, the rest of our season was a disaster. Our high-power offense from the previous few seasons became just awful under Loney (and yes we ran the same basic offense we had in previous years b/c Drake's former OC Dale Ploessl coached under Loney as a GA at ISU. Just trust me that we do not want him as our coach... We got blown out by a few teams that had the same talent level as us. We got beat by a few teams that we had better talent than and had killed the previous few years.

That said, Loney does love ISU and I really liked him as a person. As a head coach for ISU, I would be very disappointed...

case closed for Loney.

thank you.

and I would send them to you if it came to pass.

Nothing about a bandwagon.

there are dozens of more qualified coaches out there. these two wouldn't get a mention at any other program.

I'm not so sure many other programs would have been passed up by Turner Gill either. I hardly think that Pollard would choose him unless he firmly believed he was the best we can get.

I agree that Loney has NFL experience including the Vikings, Cardinals, and Rams. However, how successful has he been there? Arizona's line underachieved greatly by all accounts. The Rams suck too. Obviously the Rams have lesser talent and have been injury rittled. Those are two obsticles he'll encounter in Ames.

I have to be honest. I'd like to give a call to Bevel from the Vikings. It may be a pipe dream and he may not even be interested coaching college. It's just my idea of a good candidate.

I hate to say it, but when most coaching candidates hear "Iowa State" the say "Her?!?"

All I know about Chryst is their offense was TERRIBLE... He shouldn't be a head coach candidate anywhere...

Don't worry boys Farley-Loney won't ever grace the sidelines at Jack Trice Stadium while coaching your beloved Clones!!

I would like to see what Todd Graham or Kevin Sumlin could do at ISU...Both should be able to recruit Texas and put together a game plan that was much better than anything that loser Cheese Dip Chizik ever came up with on game day!!!

When a guy making 200 grand turns us down you know we are really at the bottom of the heap on the coaching carousel...

We a good hire we could win maybe 5-6 games next season and get ready for some really good bowl games in the future!!

IMO it'll be goodbye & sayanora to Jamie Pollard if this next coach doesnt win!!!!
Seriously? Jamie Pollard is one of the greater things that has kept ISU in competition with the rest of the nation. True, we're not winning, but how do we keep getting recruits if there isn't some shred of hope that players see. Do you think we'd get half of the freshmen players we had this year if we didn't have Chiz? How about the improvements to the stadium? It takes time and money to build an all around successful athletics program. I'm assuming you could handle the pressure of a $40M+ budget better? Get serious. There isn't one person upset with Pollard and what he has done here.

Since there are "dozens" of more qualified coaches than Loney. Please give us 5 realistic choices in your mind. Here's mine.

1. Turner Gill-Was my first choice. No more.
2. Steve Loney-Many positives with him.
3. Paul Rhodes-former ISU asst. Good coach, knows the landscape.
4. Paul Chryst-Wisc. had a down year, but last year was good...offensive mind.
5. Terry Bowden- I originally said I'd prefer no one from the South, but this guy has been blown off so many times that I think he'd be pretty loyal to us. Plus has a HC background.

"There isn't one person upset with Pollard and what he has done here."

Yes, there is. Not me though.

I posted this in another thread about Chryst:

Not a huge fan of hiring Chryst. This last year Wisconsin ranked #43 in scoring, #82 in passing yards, #14 in rushing (good), #49 in first downs, and #59 in 3rd down conversions.

Didn't they also have a game where they rushed it like 60 times? I don't care how well it's working that game, you have to throw it some just to work it in...

You could put an immobile stick figure at QB and the offense would be the same as if you had Seneca Wallace back there. The Wisconsin offense is the epitome of slow, boring, traditional Big 10 football.

I've been to numerous Badger games over the past 3 years and among many things, there is one obvious constant on offense. (Note: I would take the Badger O-lines any day though)

1st down: Run through the 4-6 hole.
2nd down: Run through the 4-6 hole. 3-5 hole if they get crazy!
(this is where is gets exciting!)
3rd down: Run through the 4-6 hole if 1st down is w/in 3 yards.
3rd down option 2: Some slow playaction pass with 2 split recievers and a lumbering tight end that usually ends in an overthrown ball or a sack. (Occurs when 1st down is beyond 4-6 hole running distance).

Next series. Repeat steps 1-3. Hope for more than 5 yards on the 1st down dive.

It's like Ken O'keefe except geared toward the run, if you can imagine that.

He has had some very successful offenses and teams up there but unfortunately for the Big 10 juggernaut style offenses, the game has changed....... and for the better IMO.

No thanks.

That's fine...turn them in...i'll take them. We don't need anyone jumping on and off the bandwagon. I'll support ISU no matter what.

Uhhh... not sure what world you live in, but we most certainly DO need the "bandwagon" fans as you call them. 30,000 die hard fans won't make this a successful program. It's pretty hard for a casual fan to get excited about a team that doesn't win very much.

Interesting. Bevell was actually a GA at ISU in 1997. In 1996, he was also the passing game coordinator/QB coach at now-defunct Westmar University in LeMars.

Here's a wild guess - with HEAD COACHING experience.....

What about Chan Gailey????

He was at Georgia Tech who cut him to get Paul Johnson from Navy. But, he had a decent record at Gtech and has extensive NFL experience. And would not be his first horse/pony show????
