South Dakota Pregame Thread

Yes. The AP poll that came out on 11 AUG was the "week 1" poll. The next poll, the "week 2" poll comes out after this weekend's games are done. And they will likely only list ISU's game against SD in the "last week" line for how ISU did in their last game. I can just about guarantee that there will be a voter or two who will have totally forgot that ISU even had a big win in week 0 when they are filling out their ballot.
Honestly everyone will forget about beating KSU, until the conference season starts for everyone else

Fast start = Cyclones cruise

Slow start = We all sweat this one out

Stop USD run game and I will feel REALLY good about not only the game, but also stopping TOE's run game next week (USD averaged 4.4 YPC against Wisconsin last season)

If it makes you feel any better, Wisconsin gave up 4.6 ypc on the entire year.

Very curious how we play against a pocket passing QB, who had two total rushes over 10 yards last year.

Seems like this defense struggles more against mobile QB's than we do against pocket QB's

I don't know the style of Bouman/USD offense, but offenses that typically have success moving the ball on us are quick read/quick throw passing game and spread-run game. TTech and Ok State come to mind; not overly mobile QB's but good arms and quick throws.

Think all the new South Dakota has coaches and players will cause some continuity issues

They probably have x number of scripted plays and might look good to start. But think things would slow down somewhat as the script ends

I certainly respect what USD has done but how are they so high in all of these rankings when they replaced 16 of 22 starters and have a new coaching staff?

We could have easily beaten a ranked team by double digits on a neutral site last week so I’m expecting a comfortable win. Give me ISU -14.5 all day.
It really isn't a new coaching staff, though. The head coach retired last season and the DC took over the head coach role. Offensive coordinator left and we replaced him with our TEs coach. The new DC is Coach Johansen's friend who has been a DC for multiple years at Northwestern (Orange City) and they spent countless hours bouncing ideas off each other when they were both DCs. I don't think the top three coaching positions miss much of step in this transition. A lot of the starters that are replacing the 16 that left are coming in with starter like snap counts from last season and Coach Rosenthal has done an unbelievable job hitting on the transfer portal. Be careful brushing off a team that is one of the top favorites to win the MVFC and championship.

ISU only scored 21 on UND last season and UND finished 5-7.

USD does run a very pro-style offense, which ISUs defense typically does struggle with. Aidan has been smart with ball and efficient.

Good to see someone else on the same page as me. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Coyotes open with a maddeningly methodical clock-chewing drive similar to what North Dakota had a year ago. After that, I would expect some false starts and miscommunications with 3 new transfers on the offensive line. I hope Heacock isn't afraid to throw some creative blitzes at them; obviously we'll need to get to Bouman before he finds the open read.

Defensive linemen are easier to plug n play, so opening up holes in the running game may be tough initially. Hopefully we can take advantage of a rather young secondary that hasn't had much time to gel. Get the ball to our TEs early and often and the rest will open up.

I just don’t think we can use anything they did last year as a measuring tool, given the personnel they’ve lost. They had what, 70% of starters leave?

That’s not to say they won’t do well in those categories, maybe they have depth that’s ready to take over. But last year can’t really be used as a measurement.

Simply not a true statement. Our system has struggled with mobile QBs and teams that can run the ball from power spread sets against our 3-man front. Pro-style offenses, which we dont see often in the Big XII of course, have not had a great deal of success against our 3-3-5 stack.

Thanks for the background. I'm not brushing them off but I'm saying a Top 20 FBS team should be able to handle a Top 5 FCS team, especially as ISU has already played one of the toughest games on its schedule and USD will be playing its first game with 16 new starters. Everyone keeps saying "TRAP GAME" but I actually like this spot for ISU.

You can reference what ISU did against UND last year but I can reference what ISU did LAST WEEK against a top 20 team on a neutral site. ISU was 1 yard away from winning by 3 scores...and that includes getting beat for 14 points on two blown coverages that likely won't happen very often.

Welcome to CF, and thanks for shedding some light on USD.

I don't think the UND game is a good proxy. ISU only had seven true possessions in the game, which was shortened by UND having a 23 play, 12:24 drive in the second quarter. They had a mobile quarterback and a gameplan that took advantage of a very green linebacking corps that didn't hit their run fits consistently or decisively and left holes in the short passing game. The strength of last year's defense was the secondary, which was completely moot against UND. When ISU scored, they scored quickly. UND ended up with 38 minutes of possession. Frustrating as it was to watch, the game was never in doubt.

I fully expect USD to try to shorten the game, and ISU's defense generally will let teams play underneath. But I'd be surprised if ISU's run defense was anything but stout, and unlike last year, ISU has a game under its belt to clean up execution and a lot of experience in the first two levels of the defense.

Sagarin has ISU at #41 (after beating KSU). Only 1 B12 team is in his top 30 teams (ASU).

I keep seeing this and I am struggling to find "3 scores." I assume the one yard is Carson's run on 4th down that was ruled down inside the 1 on review. ISU was up 3 at that point. A TD makes it a 10 point lead - assuming successful PAT. That is 2 scores, not 3.

I think they’re saying when we gave away the ball at the one yard line.
