South Dakota Pregame Thread

I completely forgot USD’s defensive coordinator is from Northwestern College. As someone that graduated from NW a few years ago, and watched plenty of games, I still couldn’t tell you what kind of scheme to expect.
Thanks for pointing that out. He recruited my oldest fairly heavily for NW.

May have to find another way to watch the game this weekend.

NEWS: Fox and YouTube TV are in a carriage dispute ahead of the College Football season.

The deadline to reach an agreement is Wednesday at 5 PM EST

I don't gamble but with a slog of games starting Thursday-Monday, I'd bet they get a deal done.

People simply have to realize several things.

1. For 15 to 20 years this university didn't even try to compete in football. In fact, people were actively trying to destroy it. Meanwhile Iowa was in the top 20 every year and we lost 15 in a row to them all the while the sport was exploding in popularity. I was out of college before I remember Iowa state beating Iowa in football. A generation of fans was lost, that isn't coming back. It will take another 25 years to undo that damage.

2. The university to the east has way more money, more population and by the way they churn out a more wealthy donors due to their degree mix.

3. People are just flat out low on cash. Inflation has been wild, the cost of everything has almost doubled in the last 5 years. Except for corn, that hasn't doubled, and as a rule farmer income is not good right now.

4. The generation with disposable income is 50 or above, and those people by and large are Iowa fans due to number 1.

5. It wasn't until 2005 or so that Iowa state started churning out more graduates than Iowa.

In reality it's a miracle we ever made it out of that mess. An absolute miracle that this program is where it is now. The damage done to the fan base was so extreme, it just isn't something that can be fixed in a few years. It takes an entire generation. It's getting there though.
But they don't have Matt Campbell.

As the great Al Davis said “just win baby”. Winning solves everything and I notice more Cyclone attire in our area and less Hawkeye. The Hawkeye fan locally is retired and the 20’s & 30’s are Cyclones. Don’t underestimate the sustained success of Men’s basketball compared to the morgue in Carver.

Pros/cons of running tempo offense vs USD.
More plays in the game gives ISU more chances to capitalize on mismatches and mistakes of an inferior opponent.
More plays in the game wears down USD's defense faster, allowing ISU to dominate in the 2nd half due to advantages in depth and conditioning.
More plays in the game increases the chances of an ISU injury during the game.
More plays in the game gives EIU more data to analyze.

There’s a reason they transferred down from P4…
Kinda my thinking. SD did land some reinforcements around the DL from P4 level, but were a lot of backups that didn’t see playing time beforehand. I don’t think you can automatically assume a player that enrolled at a P4 school previously is P4 quality. But we’ll see.

Also sounds like the kid that transferred to Kentucky was a damn good one. He didn’t have a 4 star transfer ranking for no reason.

The only way we are going to continue to build the fan base is to keep winning at a high level, and hopefully the Squawks start falling off. I expect alumni to be fans, but we have to get people excited about cheering and going to events at ISU from the group that did not attend ISU or never went to college at all. Basically people like me, a sports fan that did did not attend ISU, I will add my kids did, but I did not. Those are the people that EIU has made a killing on, people that have no reason to be a squawk fan, but are, because they have won in the past and everyone around them are also fans of the team.
the more we appear in the national spotlight, the better for growth in fans (this is a captain obvious type comment)....it's no wonder that when schools make the CFP for the first time or go far in the NCAA tournament, the exposure is huge for that school...pretty sure TCU saw a massive bump in admissions apps following their runner-up finish in 2022

Buhr also back evidently? Or was he also listed there last week?

Also crazy how big offensive lines have gotten. I remember it being a big deal in the 90s when for the first time an NFL team had a starting line all over 300 lbs. Now the Iowa States of the world are minimum 300+ and averaging 325 on the two-deep.

The days of the 6 foot 290 pound guy playing offensive line is over in major college football and the NFL, they are all now 6'4" and 320 pounds and up.

Also seems Brezina must be reasonably healthy?

You know how cagey CMC is on such things though.

This definitely fits the definition of a “trap” or tough spot game. Coming off a big game overseas and playing a good FCS team that might by human nature be harder to get up for. Plus we have Iowa coming in next week. Although have a game under our belts might help us in some ways too.

You should watch CMC's postgame comments about the first 4 weeks of the schedule. Nobody is taking any of these games lightly within the team/facility

I'm honestly really curious how we approach this game from a game management side since we've already played a conference opponent. In the past, the staff really does not want to show a lot and use these games as more of a scrimmage just to get some reps in and get the game in hand early so younger guys can get some playing experience with only about 10 different plays ran. Do we use this same approach, or do we essentially go all out now that we have a game in hand?
