South Dakota Pregame Thread

Good afternoon. I’m a huge Cyclone fan but also USD as well. Looking forward to Saturday in one regard, and totally not in another.

Just chiming in to have discussion about this game. USD is very much looking forward to this game. The finished last year losing to Montana State in the semi finals at Bozeman.

We did lose a lot of guys from last year to the portal, but I feel pretty strongly they did a good job filling the void. The offensive line is going to be the big question if the Coyotes can even hang with Iowa State. Our skill guys are good, but certainly not as good as the Cyclones. USD’s one hope of having a shot is if the Ireland trip last week with all the travel and the fact the Squawks are next Saturday is enough to create the “trap game” mentality.

I would love to talk about this game throughout the week with you all. It’s our opener with a new head coach and a lot of new faces. Our recruiting coordinator came from Iowa State. He was on Matt’s staff for 3 years. He learned a lot from Matt and assistant coaches. Still has a strong affinity for Iowa State.

I get the fact no one’s super excited about this game except for me, but still it has to be played. We are 15.5 Dogs and I would’ve guessed it to be more. Anyway, if you have any questions fire away.
I'm mostly worried about Bouman's deep ball since a couple of our young safeties got exposed last Saturday. They bit hard on a couple pump fakes and WR jukes.

I doubt anyone in Iowa State's locker room is assuming South Dakota to be a pushover. We have enough history to show that no opponent is to be taken lightly.

I LOVED how the strong side of our offensive line imposed their will against the Wildcats in the 2nd half. Depth could be a concern for South Dakota- how's their 2nd string defensive line? At first glance, the linebackers and secondary seem to be a bit smallish. Hopefully our TEs can abuse them with some easy catches and hard YAC.

USD will have over 1000 fans at the game. I think we were allowed 400, and based on the number of people that reached out to me about my tickets, it might be more than that. The Coyote Red Bus was fortunate to get a spot in the RV village so if you’re there, stop and have a beer with some really solid people.

Our DC last year is now head coach, so how that affects our defense makes me nervous. I expect our D line to hold up for a good part of the game. But a new DC who has never coached a D1 game makes me a bit nervous.

Offensively, I think there’s potential Iowa States Dline could raise a lot of hell. Bouman is a good QB, but limited mobility. If he gets time he can make some great throws. I’d be shocked if we ran the ball well against your front 7. But who knows.

Don't worry about their deep ball, they don't throw many and will throw even less with Adams gone. I'm worried about the dink and dunk 10 minute drives like North Dakota did last year.

The only concern I have for this game is the USD D-Line. They have several P4 transfers coming in this season. If they can be competitive with the ISU O-Line, I think they could make it a 4 quarter game.

If not, it will be blowout city.

Aidan Bouman can't run and will need to find a WR to throw to. Good luck with that. The Running back is good, but also good luck.

They have transfer Tennel Bryant who will be the fastest player on the field. Not sure if he will get snaps though.

You nailed it 100%.

Cyclones have far more depth

The games I watched he looked good, but Theis was getting a majority of the carries.

I'm just glad that Adams and his 30 yards per catch went elsewhere.
You're not far off. Based off their stats from last season, they pretty much split carries with Theis getting slightly more.

I wanted Adams to stay at Iowa State. Looks like he's at Cal now, so we'll see how he does against better competition this season.

There’s a reason they transferred down from P4…

Inviting students into Hilton to watch the KState game on the video boards was an immense step to growing the future fanbase.
The only way we are going to continue to build the fan base is to keep winning at a high level, and hopefully the Squawks start falling off. I expect alumni to be fans, but we have to get people excited about cheering and going to events at ISU from the group that did not attend ISU or never went to college at all. Basically people like me, a sports fan that did did not attend ISU, I will add my kids did, but I did not. Those are the people that EIU has made a killing on, people that have no reason to be a squawk fan, but are, because they have won in the past and everyone around them are also fans of the team.

I don’t want to be them. I like our lane.

I completely forgot USD’s defensive coordinator is from Northwestern College. As someone that graduated from NW a few years ago, and watched plenty of games, I still couldn’t tell you what kind of scheme to expect.

May have to find another way to watch the game this weekend.

NEWS: Fox and YouTube TV are in a carriage dispute ahead of the College Football season.

The deadline to reach an agreement is Wednesday at 5 PM EST

People simply have to realize several things.

1. For 15 to 20 years this university didn't even try to compete in football. In fact, people were actively trying to destroy it. Meanwhile Iowa was in the top 20 every year and we lost 15 in a row to them all the while the sport was exploding in popularity. I was out of college before I remember Iowa state beating Iowa in football. A generation of fans was lost, that isn't coming back. It will take another 25 years to undo that damage.

2. The university to the east has way more money, more population and by the way they churn out a more wealthy donors due to their degree mix.

3. People are just flat out low on cash. Inflation has been wild, the cost of everything has almost doubled in the last 5 years. Except for corn, that hasn't doubled, and as a rule farmer income is not good right now.

4. The generation with disposable income is 50 or above, and those people by and large are Iowa fans due to number 1.

5. It wasn't until 2005 or so that Iowa state started churning out more graduates than Iowa.

In reality it's a miracle we ever made it out of that mess. An absolute miracle that this program is where it is now. The damage done to the fan base was so extreme, it just isn't something that can be fixed in a few years. It takes an entire generation. It's getting there though.
