Chris Williams & Brent Blum are both back from Ireland. The guys analyze Iowa State’s 24-21 season-opening win over Kansas State and touch on South Dakota. Plus, it’s officially game week for all of college football. Guess the point spreads is back! Presented as always by Mechdyne.

Enjoy!

@brentblum mentioned USD ties to the state of Iowa. Turns out most of their coaches have some type of tie to the state.

Travis Johansen (HC) - Grand View (13-18)
Tim Morrison (OC) - played (95-98) and coached (02-08) at Wartburg, coached at Upper Iowa (21-22)
Billy Kirch (DC) - Northwestern College (15-24)
Matt Vitzthum (QB) - attended Wartburg
Will Finley (LB) - head coach at Waldorf (20-22)
Eric Finney (CB) - Iowa Western (18-23)
Josh Manchigiah (S) - GA at Iowa (24)
Nathan Nelson (DL) - played at Iowa
A.J. Coons (asst WR) - from Solon
Kyle Taylor (asst LB) - played at Iowa (I think)
Josh Rosenthal (GM) - asst director of player personnel at ISU (19-21)

...and one of the few guys that doesn't have an Iowa tie has a Big 12 tie:
Patrick Markarian (OL) - GA at Baylor (21-22)

Just a thought.

Williams trotted out his definition of a trap, which is fine.

Only problem is, that definition included “Everyone’s telling you how great you are”.

And absolutely no one, certainly not the national media, not the local media, not their coaches, and not even us, are telling them how great they are.

Well, aside from Cyclone Jerry.

Instead, we’re talking about how some things looked good, some things looked bad—really bad—mistakes were made, and there are obvious problems to work on. Lots of improvement to make.

So, distinctly not a qualifier for a trap game.

Might be a “letdown look-ahead” as they say on The Solid Verbal podcast. Team A is a clear favorite over Team B this week, and Team A has a big game/rival on deck. Get caught looking ahead and you expose yourself to the letdown game.

Edited to add: I'm not worried about the Cyclones overlooking this game. Just offering the alternative.

Didn't hear anybody talk about this as a trophy game. Nice to have a permanent memento of the victory in Ireland.

Ought to fill it with Guinness . . . or Ames Lager!

I think it is, but I think it really helps that this team has a physical style and the patience to grind one out.

I feel pretty confident that Campbell has their attention with his many mentions of past Dublin teams struggling.

We'll clean up a few things and after a sluggish first quarter, run away from the Coyotes. Cyclones by 3+ scores.

Campbell has been obsessed with making sure our guys focus on South Dakota the second they land back in the US, so I'd be absolutely shocked if we don't give great effort this Saturday.

Glad to hear @brentblum push back on CW about how good this SD team is. Yes it’s a trap game, but I keep hearing all these potential negative issues without hearing the positive that we have played a full game against very good competition while SD will still be knocking off the rust. There’s potential here to get up big early while they’re still trying to adjust to the speed of the game.

We had good luck breaking in a new opposing OC and DC last weekend, so no reason to think this wont be the same

While in Ireland we toured the Waterford Crystal plant that created that trophy. One of their display items was the trophy they created last year for Florida State. Knowing that there will be a KSU trophy greeting TCU and UNC fans next year amuses me.
