Are SMV signs required all over the state of Iowa? Or just in Algona and Kossuth County? Side by sides that can do 70 mph need to have them around here. An smv sign has a speed limit of 30-35 mph. So you can get a speeding ticket quickly.

You may want to understand the rules before driving your UTV/ATV on public roadways.

  • How to Drive on Public Roads

    • Do not exceed 35 MPH.
    • Driver must be age 18 or older with a valid driver’s license.
    • Do not drive while impaired or with open alcohol container.
    • Headlight(s) must be on at all times.

  • What is Required for the Vehicle

    • Proof of insurance.
    • Registered with Iowa DNR and sticker displayed on rear of vehicle.
    • Out-of-state vehicle must have an Iowa DNR nonresident user permit sticker.
    • Functioning required equipment, including but not limited to: horn, mirrors, headlight(s), tail lights, and
      brake lights.
    • Display slow-moving vehicle sign.

Pretty sure they’re required for any vehicle that has a maximum travel speed less than 40 mph. A side by side that goes faster than that must have certain safety features similar to automobiles, but I do not believe they require SMV signs. This is determined by state law, so local jurisdictions shouldn’t be able to set different standards on public roads.

I was getting supplies in a farm store in Waverly and the guy Infront was buying a SMV sign because DOT pulled over this large group (was over a 100) on a charity ride and told them they needed signs. Can’t remember if they got tickets though.

So it’s not just Kossuth.

I just read something that looks out of place in today’s world. I don’t think anybody sells a 3 wheeler anymore. They were really easy to tip over.
We have sold a bunch of these signs this summer, at Bomgaars. My son works at a place that sells these outfits and he is putting road lights, blinkers, and now, smv signs on everything.

You must not have read my link from the Iowa DOT. https://iowadot.gov/consultants-con.../driving-your-atv-or-utvorv-iowa-public-roads

UTVs/ATVs are not supposed to be operated faster than 35mph (even though they may be capable of more) and they need a SMV on the back.

I am guessing this is not new. So somebody decided since a lot of these vehicles have been sold in the last 3-4 years and are not street legal, it is time to get everybody on the same page.

I know there is a petition going around to allow them to go posted speed limit. I already have had a friend get killed on one these and have seen other accidents on the news.

People riding these in small towns don’t care about road rules or signs. I think for every ATV with an SMV sign there are two that don’t have one.

Since this is about SMV signs on vehicles driving under 35 mph, football is here and harvest will start soon. Slow traffic on roads are soon to be on the move. We don’t need accidents on blacktops and gravel roads.

I don't know if I have seen a single one with a SMV sign while driving on the road.

Marion and a few other municipalities/county governments have passed laws allowing them on roads. At least in Marion they are restricted to roads speed limits less than 35 MPH which is all but like two or three non-highway city owned roads. Seat belts must be worn, obey all other laws and I believe must pay a small fee for a permit.
