Just skimmed the ISU daily after finishing a article. 2 people get hit and run on Friday. 1 dead 1 injured. It was out by north Grand Mall and Walmart
I don't understand how people don't stop after things like that. Hope they catch the person.

If you’re drunk, I could see a reason to not stop. You’re going to get slapped with vehicular homicide anyways, might as well try to get away with it.

Was it a hit and run? I read that it was an elderly driver that hopped the curb, unless there was another accident. This one was Bloomington and Grand.

Yeah I guess you are legally correct, I think that sort of worked out for Prince Farming a few yrs ago when he killed his neighbor. Don't remember exactly how that turned out. He stayed till the cops came then went home till he sobered up not a true hit and run.

Article I saw called it a hit and run sounds like you have more current info than the article I saw. Still a sad deal.

I read the Daily article, which seems to have manufactured hit-and-run out of thin air. The release from Ames PD doesn’t say that. I know college kids make mistakes, but there should be an adult in the room editing. That’s REALLY bad.

Didn't he continue to drink at home to make it seem like he'd only been drinking at home and not before driving/the collision?

I don't remember anymore. CW should know he was big on that hype train for a while.

When Who13 reported on it on Saturday, it said the car left the road for an unknown reason and struck the two waiting at the bus stop. Nothing about the driver leaving the scene.

Victims were longtime family friends who attended my parents church. Driver apparently was en elderly woman who lost control of her vehicle. It’s a horrible situation.

Thank you for bringing clarity to this, my title was based of the Daily article with out additional information. My sympathy to your friends and family.

Yeah I just remember there seemed to be some murky stuff going on to basically cover his tracks but I didn't follow it real close.

Apparently the people struck were waiting for the bus and the vehicle drove up onto the sidewalk. The person probably has lots of reasons for leaving the scene. None of which are good.

It wasn’t a hit and run. It was 2 people on a walk, not waiting for the bus. Sounds like the person who hit them was older who hit the gas instead of the brake and hopped the curb.

I don't know, maybe to try to save the life/lives that you may be responsible for ending? Lending immediate first aid and calling for an ambulance immediately may be the difference between life and death.

I have a buddy who was riding his bike home on a county road. He had it lit up like a Christmas tree including extremely bright headlights and top of the line taillights that could clearly be seen for well over a mile. He was hit by a vehicle who drove off leaving him to die. He would have likely died too, except a driver saw something out of the ordinary from a nearby crossroad and turned around and came back to investigate. He suffured irreparable skeletal, ligament, muscular, and brain injuries but is lucky to be alive.

I just cannot see leaving someone to die just because you are scared that you might have to spend some time in jail for your actions. It is someone's life and you are responsible. How could you live with yourself if you just drive away?

I’m not defending it. I’m just giving a possible reason someone would not stop. Panic would set in and you may not make good choices in your condition (you’ve already made bad choices by driving drunk).

He wasn't passing judgement. An unfortunate percentage of people would leave the scene, I'm guessing.

Yep, she was an older lady, and knew she had hit them and was most likely in shock, and not sure what she was doing, from that point on. Hard to place much into what she was did for the next few minutes. It's horrible, but I am sure she was not thinking correctly or logically.

Obviously your position is the moral one. But I don't think you're being realistic. If someone is drunk, they often aren't thinking rationally. Throw in panic and confusion, and it's pretty easy to see why people leave the scene. And they often won't be able to live themselves, but they aren't thinking about that at the time of the accident. They're acting out of their own survival instinct.
