Ideas for Transfer Rules

This basketball transfer season is just nuts once again with players ane coaches all moving around before the season is done. It really takes away from the NCAA Tournament.

For basketball (men's & women's) the portal shouldn't open until after the National Championship game. Perhaps let it open the second day after that game.

Now this part goes for all sports that start in the Fall Semester and carry over to the Spring Semester. If a player is going to transfer, allow them to take "incompletes" on whatever they're enrolled in for the Spring semester I'd they choose and allow them move to their next school right away. Sure they won't be able to enroll in classes, but they can move asap and join the program without being in Spring classes. They all already take Summer classes so they should be able to be eligible if enrolled in Summer classes. Let the kids leave and start working with the programs they'll be at for the next season. With the amount of money being spent, making these kids sit around and miss Spring Ball practices is goofy.

I'll add this, if you transfer and go to a new program and take part in their Spring Ball practices but then want to transfer before the season starts...you get hit with missing a year. ***By this I mean if someone transfers in for Spring Ball but then wants to transfer after Spring Semester finishes...this would be trying to transfer twice between seasons.***

Thoughts?

The NCAA needs to stop thinking they can restrict the individual players. As bad as it is now, that won’t work.

Their effort should revolve around what the universities are allowed to do. Can the NCAA restrict the number of transfers a program takes in a given year?

This. The days of players being forced to sit out a year after transferring are gone. It's just asking to have legal action taken against you. Anything can be viewed as punitive to the athletes is going to be challenged. You can bank on it. And the courts have not exactly been keen on agreeing with the NCAA/schools.

I don't have any suggestions but yesterday I was looking at the thread that has all Big XII rosters for MBB. The average Big XII team has 4.3 players returning. That is crazy!!

Just had this conversation with my wife. I think that having a one-year sit-out rule for following a coach to another school would be a good idea.
Forcing a player to sit out for a year before playing again, while the coach they followed is able to coach immediately, is at best a poor look, and at worst, an invitation for lawsuits.

Multi-year nil deals/contracts, contract transfers for players under contract, transfer fees paid by school to obtain player under contract, player loans, etc.. Basically European soccer.

5 years of eligibility and no redshirts including medical.

My suggestion would be multiple year contracts, with buyouts or sit out option. A player wants to leave on his own or a coach wants a player to leave? Fine. But someone has to be compensated OR sit out a year.
Agreed. Let each player negotiate their terms.

This is about the only thing that I can imagine being implementable and it needs to happen soon.

Are their contracts made public?

No on limiting the number of transfers. Easiest example is when a coach leaves there's a good chance a majority of the players leave. Can't just leave a program high and dry.

I'd like to see a 2 year requirement. Apply to HS recruits and portal transfers. A situation like AJ Storr (4 schools in 4 years) isn't good for sport, schools or player.

Also feel there should be transfer fees. Schools should be able to "protect" something like 8 players each year. If a protected player transfers, the school player is transferring to should pay old school % of players pay at new school. Maybe 25%.

Sure you can. Coaches are a major reason why players commit to a school. Schools don't have a right to retain their players any more than your employer has the right to your labor.

There needs to be better ways to prevent tampering.
Related to that is what I see as a problem with agents having too much power over some of these players and their movement. I'm assuming the agents are basically doing the tampering for the teams in a lot of cases because they're the ones shopping their dudes around to the highest bidder.

Think we're talking on opposite sides of the spectrum. The comment I replied to implied a school can only accept X amount of transfers, not the school being allowed to force a player to stay.

They need contracts. Multi year contract with buyouts. They can only get out of their deal if they leave for the pros.
