I remember laughing at him when we played Washington St in the tournament. I guess the coaches see something I'm not
He was first team all conference, all defensive team, and 2nd in the country in rebounds per game with a pretty unreal 25% rebounding rate.
Especially with big man evals, I absolutely trust this staff. From Australia and apparently picked up basketball fairly late which would track with a big jump in ability.
17 & 12, first team all conference, defensive all conference, that seems like a lot to see.
If Jackson leaves I'd promise Rock Chatfield's minutes. He seems to have good feet and hands. Unlike Watson we just haven't seen him in meaningful minutes. I get he's abnormally young, but you'd think playing against King, Ward, Rob, Jackson, and Chatfield has made him better than if the program he was with played a different style. I'm wishcasting to some degree because presumably he'd be cheaper than a junior or senior transfer
As usual, one of the equalizers for teams with budgets like Iowa State's is minutes. I have to think Jefferson's offers were/are larger than those of any other Otz player. Maybe Momcilovic as a recruit, or Jones after last season. But he knows his skillset elevates even next season's hypothetical roster more than most any other individual players' would, so he'll have to play massive minutes and a leading role on offense. They're not looking for a cheaper replacement, or even someone else to do some of what he does. So he has certainty, despite a lighter wallet than he would have at UNC or what have you
I loved the King-Ward-Rob front court, but I think we're glossing over flaws a bit. Like Jackson, some nights Ward was just an automatic 2 fouls, and thus his value as far as winning the game tanked since he wasn't going to be on the floor. He also wasn't super physical because he knew he's a good blocker. King wasn't quick footed despite being shorter than this season's bigs. His value was being a load if Ward was getting pushed around or in foul trouble. Rob was maybe the best defender, as he could stay attached to guys' hips/wasn't a liability on switches. But I definitely remember Chatfield-like plays where he tried to step out on guards and immediately fouled them

Ok I'll give you the offensive side if he's more efficient, I'm willing to be proven wrong there. Gotta be a drop off on defense though. And that is an area we need to add to, not take away from after watching that shellacking yesterday. Guys not keeping up, out of position. Maybe he's a smart player, and makes up for lack of quickness on that end? Idk

As it sits I believe we need an athletic SG that can score and is at minimum a + defender ($$), and an athletic big/rim protector ($). If Jackson walks then it's likely a Cluff as well as a rim protector situation.

Ha I remember him the same way. Watching his video though he seems to look way more coordinated, and skilled than I remember. Maybe that's from dropping down a level, or maybe he just improved in the offseason? Likely a little of both.
doesn't seem like an above-the-rim guy, but way better at finishing around the basket than Chatfield and Jackson—a la what Rob developed into. Rebounding stats similar to what Cluff's put up and better touch would be Chatfield+ or ++, which would be great
Those are some impressive game logs. I don't much about him but looks promising to me.
Yes, Gilbert’s best attribute was he was a two-way player. That is the potential net decrease in Rohde replacing “good” Gilbert
But Rohde is flexible defensively imo, due to his length
IMO a bulk of the issue is that we can’t play him with a 3 and D wing that isn’t good on defense.
Heise is a good defender. A 1-3 on defense of Lipsey, Heise, and Rohde isn’t much different defensively than Lipsey, CuJo, Milan or Gilbert, CuJo, Milan. It is a moderate step back from Lipsey, Gilbert, Milan
Add in Toure for the times in which more quickness is needed. Pleta may help with his mobility in the frontcourt
I’d love to also add a scorer at the two that can at least be Holmes/Grill/Cujo on defense. Maybe that’s Batemon?

Clearly room for Batemon in the backcourt given we rotate 4 guards. Maybe Toure if we load manage Lipsey
Previous staffs would use Milan some at the 4 and Jefferson at 5 to make them more athletic, create mismatches on offense, and to avoid needing to spend on another big. Pleta will help imo, and still time available for a backup 5

I think he’s welcome back he may even start but hoping Chatfield’s replacement has better hands than Jackson and can jump out of the gym.
