Have to give it to the guy, he was remarkably consistent in fielding a team that was slightly above average.

Going into the year it was 8 tournaments in 11 seasons, given they would have had a berth in 2020

That’s very good for a program like Iowa. They easily could take a step back

DeVries is essentially the same age as Fran was when we was hired at Iowa. I’d argue Fran had accomplished more at that point than DeVries has.

Not saying he’d be a bad hire, but it’s no slam dunk either.

And apparently he felt the need to run from a rebuild at Drake for a season (or so) knowing full-well he was going to be the head coach at Iowa. To me, that speaks to the confidence he has in his own coaching and/or recruiting. Or, perhaps, all these narratives are changing to explain him taking the Iowa job today. Who really knows. At the end of the day, I don’t see him as a significant impediment to what goes on in Ames from a recruiting or overall program perception perspective.

While fit is important, I think Iowans put too much emphasis on the “IA Native!” “Local Connection!” aspects.

ISU fans are guilty of it as well. McD is an IA native and completely flopped here. TJ is a WI guy and first came here from a random JuCo in Florida. You have to be open because you never know what background your “right fit” guy will have.

That was by far his best team

That's why I don't get too upset about our team sucking in 2020 and 2021. Those seasons were easy to forget and a good 2020 season would have been wasted. Kind of the same thing in 2021, we couldn't go to games, so not really a huge bad memory.

He wouldve had almost his whole team back next year how would that be a rebuild.
Brodie was gone and there was no way he was keeping Overton. Hanging on to Wright and Garland was questionable as well.

It was going to be Tucker and Enright and hoping the portal pieces fit.
