Weren't the games on CBS (or similar) every night 30 years ago?

During the back half of the 90's (when I started watching) it seemed like we could watch most ISU hoops games in north Iowa through some kind of OTA broadcast that was carried by our CBS affiliate (KIMT out of Mason City).

Football was a different story.

They don't. There are plenty of empty seats up there and in the lower bowl they just don't compress.

Honestly this debate has come up again and again over the nearly 2 decades i've been on this site and its always a dumb one. Right up there with people who hate on the band, i consider people who want to cut the students' seating allotment to be ****** college sports fans.

But the students that buy tickets and don't show up are good college sports fans?

The biggest problem with students tickets is they can't be transferred to the general public.

If you could figure that part of it out, there would be no reason to change the amount of available seating. But I guarantee that the general public would buy (and use) a lot of the student seats that don't get used.

Yeah, i have no clue how the ticketing systems work.

I know that the "overselling" of student tickets always makes a few mad (i.e. for the 1-2 games where then people can't go)....but it would be great if in real-ish time they could release more back to the public from student section (push students down, then fill above). They kind of did that for the last football game where the GA section for discount tickets was in the student section and seems to kind of just work out.

Why does the balcony of the student section have a sea of empty seats for every conference game besides KU?

But, any student on campus had incredibly easy access to watch the game was the point. Moreso than today where they have to subscribe to a streaming service (or pirate it).

When we have a full student section, it's electric. When we have a bare one, it's kind of embarrassing. There has to be a way to facilitate the opportunity for a full crazy student section when we can get that kind of participation, and at least have the opportunity to fill those seats with other fans when they're less into it.

I can't think it would be that difficult to look at the schedule and determine which are the two or three big home games each season that the students will pack and then turn around and sell the other games to the general public. As others have pointed out before, the games when the students are on break are generally packed, as the public can purchase those tickets.
Students get to pack it in for Kansas and a couple other schools, but the GP gets those tickets in the upper bowl the rest of the year. If the students are showing up and complaining about no seating, then reserve the first few rows in the upper deck for them, but sell the rest.

Student attendance was obviously lacking last night but I honestly am more upset with the general public attending games.

I have season tickets in section 205 and I've noticed that even during our big games (Marquette, Baylor, Kansas) that the top rows of sections 208 and 209 are always empty. I was under the impression that we've sold out our remaining games....so if someone is selling a ticket, why would the person who bought it not go to the games?

Those two sections in particular have many empty seats and it doesn't matter who we play.

Student section needs to be reduced to only lower bowl, imo

Daughter stopped buying season tickets because the last two years she couldn’t get in to the games she wanted since they oversell student tickets.

Well, let’s get a system that students can sell their tickets for $10 or whatever. Other students get first priority for GA at that price. On game day or a day in advance any remaining tickets turn into assigned seats and are sold to the public at whatever reduced price the AD deems right. Gotta give incentive to give up the unused tickets rather than letting them go to waste.

But that would require not overselling the student section. Which, may be a good thing in the long run anyways.

are students still charged an "athletics fee" like we were in the early 2000's which got you into game for "free" to all events? or has that long since passed.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is a higher athletics fee and then they charge the students for tickets now because, you know, capitalism.

I was a student from 2017-2020 and the way we had it is that it was an extra cost (not included in tuition/fees)...you could get football only tickets or an "all sports package"...freshmen would be entered into the lottery for the all sports package I believe.

Yeah, that's a great idea and I've thought the same....some way to fill the seats without others being grumpy because they paid.

I think even that model you proposed could be for other students....like a "hey, students.....come check out a game on us.....claim your ticket now!" type of deal and of course also just GA type for the remaining for public because it seems over breaks the public does a good job snatching up tickets they normally can't get.

I gotta give the students a break for last night, it was friggin very cold walking to my car to C4 and most of them walk to the game. AND, it was a perfect night for a cuddle study date, find a warm room, bring in the beer and blankets and a few cliff notes to go over during interludes. Maybe have the game on one of your phones due to modern technology to check the score occasionally. Central campus was off limits for me in this type of weather, let alone a trip to the Armory for a game!

Most likely they are owned by people that selling those seats, and people are not purchasing them at the prices they want. At the women's games all the seats around us have different people in them from game to game, there are only 4 seats in our row that have the same people most of the games, it us and the couple beside us.

In 2005 we had to buy tickets, I remember there being Football, Basketball, and All-Sport options. I'd bet there was an athletics fee tacked onto u-bills as well
