2025 MBB Coaching Carousel

I'm guessing he's made enough money and has been at Gonzaga for over 35 years.

That's probably what it comes down to. How much longer does he want to coach (he's 62) and would he want to move across country. He might be more prone to take a job like UCLA, Utah or Arizona State than IU. Although, I would expect IU will be willing to pay someone a big chunk of money. Maybe they'll call Danny Hurley (aka Bobby Knight Jr.).

Yeah, you have to think if he wanted to have one last job and do it at a high major school, he would have done it when one of the west coast schools opened up. Though its been 6 years since UCLA did and 15 since Oregon did and those are probably the best options.

If the Indiana job opens up why wouldn’t someone like Mark Few be interested? I just think Few has done about all he can there. Maybe he’s ultimately happy and will retire there.
He's got it too good at Gonzaga IMO.
The grass isn't always greener. It's been a long time since Indiana has been good. He's got a really nice niche at Gonzaga IMO.

Indiana is going to throw the world at Scott Drew. I can see him taking it this time.

Minnesota may not open if he gets 3ish more.

I can see Drew turning it down, he's pretty darn good support at Baylor and I don't think NIL money is a problem there.
After the AD chased Kim out that pretty much leaves MBB and FB as the marquee sports. At least in my viewpoint.

If I’m Indiana I back the truck up to Rick Patinos house and dump all the money out. He’s old but give him 4 years of revitalizing the program. He has baggage but they need to do something different. Indiana basketball is like Nebraska football now. Kids don’t know they are a blue blood because it’s been so fun

Just built a new house in Waco and his parents have moved there. Combine that with the new arena, I highly doubt he leaves BU where he has won a national title and just as capable of doing it again there as he would be at IU (which is an overrated job).

TJ mentioned.

The guy says it's 80% likely it'll be one of the guys on his list and then puts Greg McDermott on there. Why do they bother posting something if they are just going to shoot their credibility to **** with what they write?

I wouldn't be so sure on Mac. He all but took Ohio State a few years ago and there's still friction with the AD regardless of the last contract extension. Plus, with where he's at in life, why not take $30M from Indiana and if you wash out in 4 years, you just retire.

Baylor is a great job right now because of him, Indiana sucks

What’s his beef with the AD?

I’m not sure there’s a school TJ would leave Iowa State for.

The usual. There's never though money for facilities and all that. They've also got very, very different personalities which creates friction.

Its a new situation for him. At UNI he worked for Rick Hartzell who he'd known forever, we know what a nice guy Jamie is and when he got the Creighton job he worked for his leak literal best friend in Bruce Rasmussen.

This is the first time that he's had to deal with someone he didn't really like.

You win at Indiana and the money is endless for whatever you want to do.

It's a GREAT job, they just can't stop stepping on their own dicks...

It’s a great job but it also has a Nebraska football past its prime feel to it too. They’ve haven’t been past the Sweet 16 in 20+ years and it’s been 8+ years since they’ve made the Sweet 16.

All of the built in advantages, similar to 1990s Nebraska football, are gone. To me, they aren’t much different than any other Top 25 program - if you hire the right coach, it works. If you don’t, they are mediocre at best.

I get the comparison, but IMO football and hoops are entirely different animals in general due to roster size and how that equates to building an elite roster. It only takes 8-10 solid players to build an elite basketball team. And really only 2-3 All-Conference level players to be a Top 10 team. Whereas in football it takes 40+kids that can step on the field and not be over their head, plus 20ish freshman/sophomores that will someday be capable of starter minutes.

Specific to the two schools you reference there are also two specific items:
  1. Indiana can build a Top 10 roster just recruiting players from Indiana and its bordering states (Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, Illinois). Nebraska can't build a Top 10 program with Nebraska and kids from bordering states. Most perennial top 10 football teams are located in states that produce a high # of P4 recruits.
  2. Nebraska's big advantage in the 70/80's was its weight room. They were ahead of the curve and could compliment elite lines with recruits from Texas, California. That advantage will never exist again.

Is Indiana that much of a better job than Baylor? Baylor is not hurting for money and they don't have the insane expectations that Indiana fans have.
