Rumours released today in 1977

Stevie wanting to be a Heartbreaker would have been an interesting parallel universe.
I am partial to Christine as the lead.
Christine writing You Making Loving Fun based on an affair she was having on the side of John (and then lied about) was cold... But, it sure as hell made for successful music.

It's nearly nonsensical to understand how bad of shape emotionally/socially the band was, yet Rumours was the outcome of that. And another ~10 years of music after that. Just...how?

I had a sister that liked some disco, but my brothers set me straight early on. They had good taste in music. I heard a lot of Fleetwood Mac, Zeppelin, CCR, Beatles, Crosby Stills and Nash, Hendrix, Cream etc when I was barely old enough to know better.

My disco hand is strong.

My mother's second husband had an artificial leg, but he sure could boogie.

Step sister would compete in disco contests with her fiance.....who broke off the engagement and came out as gay.

Sure. I've lived a life.

How they made this as they battled demons while their relationships blew up...

All while making the others sing songs about the breakup.

The making of is just a crazy crazy story.

FWIW some great albums and songs are the product of some form of deep issues so in that way it fits perfectly.

Sir, this is not a John Prine thread.

1977, so, anyone on CF that would have been a fan of it when it came out has to be at least mid-60's now. So, when (or how) did you young pups get into listening to it?

I didn't get it when it first came out, but it was probably 1979 when I got the album. One of the first albums I ever got . . . through the Columbia Records album deal. Still have it.

My sister gave me her stereo when she moved out to go to college and this was the first full album I bought as a 6th grader. It sounded amazing! I was shunned on the playground because I hated Kiss, the Miami Dolphins and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

I think it’s one of those albums where if people don’t consider it “greatest” tier it’s only because of how much exposure it had. Probably same as Thriller and Purple Rain. Beatles albums would be the same if there was a very clear answer to which album is most iconic the way those three are clearly the most iconic.

I used to have a making of Rumours DVD but can’t find it. It was its own documentary, not the VH1. All of the members are probably somewhat underrated for what they could do at their best.

Most of my earliest musical influences were from my older brothers' albums I played ad nauseum and some albums my mom had lying around.

Co-signed.

Also, everyone talks about how much of a crush they have/had on Stevie Nicks in this era, but I'm Team Christine all the way.
A buddy of mine I used to work with was a longtime sound guy for a band back in the day. He said one time they were staying in the same hotel as Fleetwood Mac. He and a buddy of his from the band were on an elevator when Stevie entered. She was drunk/stoned out of her gourd and she started coming on to my buddy. She even pretty much tried to drag him off the elevator on her floor. His buddy said he was crazy for not getting a slice of that pie, but my buddy was still trying to save his doomed marriage at the time.

My buddy Clay and I were golfing. We were going down the first hole. Talked about the concert, Clay said "lets go". There are bunch of girls going, I said ok. We got seats on the side, he spotted the girls on the floor and said he would be right back. I sat thru the concert myself. And Clay married the girl he went down to see.

The radio station growing up was soft rock/contemporary and this version of Fleetwood Mac was (and still is) on what seems like about every 6 songs.

So whenever I hear any of it I get brought back to good, simpler times.

Me too sound like a slice of my playlist! But I went cowboy for a while instead of Disco, Waylon, Willie, Outlaws, Skynard, Jerry Jeff.. I have owned one pair of cowboy boots and one hat. over 40 years ago.

The lyrics of Gold Dust Woman are maybe my favorite of any song recorded.

‘Rulers make bad lovers. You better put your kingdom up for sale’ is brilliant.

And the last two minutes of the track is amazing with the ‘black widow’ and ‘dragon’ and ‘gold dust woman’ lyrics. It’s a perfect song.
