Why all the doom and gloom?

After attending yesterday's game, I had a few thoughts about all the pessimism I've been reading on the forums and in the Twitter-sphere.
Firstly, I am as disappointed in yesterday's outcome as the next guy. ISU missed a ton of opportunities on both sides of the ball that could have swung the game into a comfortable win for our guys. However, hats off to TTU on turning our missed chances into their own momentum builders and they played to win (have to give credit where credit is due). I hate looking for moral victories in a loss, but we were in no way outclassed on the field, something we've all seen a lot of through the years. I know that social media reactions are not indicative of Cyclone Nation as a whole, but I really just don't understand where some of the fan base is coming from saying that this team is washed up and the season is over.

It also stings with the first CFP rankings coming out this week and the national media doing us no favors. Taking the loss this week also leaves the door to the B12 CCG more open than I would like, but we can all thank Houston for doing us a solid in this department.

Despite all this, this ISU squad is still in the driver's seat for both the CCG and a potential CFP spot. We don't need to rely on help from our conference mates (might need a double check on a potential tiebreaker with Colorado).

If you would have told me ISU was playing meaningful football games in November with national attention and postseason implications, I would sign up for that in a heartbeat. This team is still damn good and will make the adjustments needed to finish out strong.

However, if the sky is indeed falling and we sputter out the rest of the year, feel free to bookmark this and send me an "I told you so."

Let me know your thoughts!

It feels like we were due for a bad game. Tech had a better gameplan than us last night, and it showed.

How the team looks in KC next week will be telling.

We played not great against UCF so there is reason for some minor concern.

But what team doesn’t have minor concerns right now? 8 total?

There is D&G because it is a matter of trust.

CMC, like many coaches, is a control freak. And stubborn.

Those things can be blessings and curses.

He wants to eliminate mistakes, take care of the ball, win TOP by running, and not showing too much in the first half.

That's fine if you have superior talent and luck.

Problems arise when you always spot the team a score to start the game, and the other team sells out against the run.

The rest of the season and how far ISU goes comes down to if we get first or second half CMC from the Iowa game.

I hope he plays to win, but I worry he'll do like ISU did on that last drive, and play not to lose.

That goal line play where we got caught in man and they walked in to win it was just stupid.

Losing stinks, but if you’re miserable and depressed every time you lose, you might want to consider abandoning sports. It happens. Texas A&M, Clemson, K-State and others shouldn’t have lost yesterday either according to odds and talent. Several things broke Tech’s way yesterday…and it’s not like they are a terrible team.

Hilarious to say all these things about literally the best coach we've ever had at a time when college football is as competitive as it's ever been, and we're as competitive as we've ever been. The answer to the question in the OP is some people are just losers and have to tear things down to feel better.

I’m not doom and gloom because I didn’t think we’d be 7-1. But to lose as a two touchdown favorite at home (after almost losing as a two touchdown favorite at home last game) coming off a bye with us being as healthy has we’ve been all year is certainly very disappointing.

Huge missed opportunity is how I feel this morning.

Of course, we all would have signed up for 7-1 at this point. But when the "1" in the 7-1 is a loss to a two-TD underdog at home that ends an historic run, it's pretty disheartening.

Just as it doesn't do anyone any good to go full-on doomer after a loss, nor does it help to deny that people are justifiably pretty disappointed.

It shouldn't be that hard to properly calibrate your frustration level: very frustrated with yesterday, maybe a bit more doubt about the future than before, but still lots of reason to be optimistic.

Easy enough.

Bolded part above is the key IMO.

Losing to the worst pass defense in the country... and not really ever trying to exploit that weakness is indeed a cause for concern IMO. It is unexplainable. You do NOT try to stubbornly flex your run game muscles against a horrible secondary. That is horrible coaching.... period.

Agreed. And I can’t think of another coach in the Big 12 I would rather have. Last year people might have said Leipold…historically people have thought highly of Grundy. Look at their teams. Wittingham is struggling to keep Utah afloat. Klieman is probably closest, but I don’t think he’s better. And the K-State program was certainly in a better spot when he took over than our program was when Campbell took the reins. (Not hating on Rhoads obviously, but I don’t think there will be much argument about this.)

The UCF game allowed me to dream that this program had turned a corner. We wouldn’t regularly choke anymore against opponents we should run all over; being down by 14 points wouldn’t be a death sentence; we could manage the clock and timeouts; hell, we could even win a Big 12 football game with a field goal.

I guess it was just a lovely two-week fever dream.

No idea we are just fine, well with some needed tweaks on the O.
I think this is gonna be like the Ohio game last year. Need to tweak the offense a bit after the last two weeks. Time to get to work and run the table

Being happy after a loss is a "loser mentality". I guarantee you there aren't any people okay with last night's performance in the football building today... and there shouldn't be.

I hate the thinking... "I'm thrilled being 7-1!". Especially when that 1 loss is to an average team that you were favored at home by 2 TDs and you gave the game away. Nobody should be fine with that. Just my worthless two cents.

See, I look at the fact that we dropped back to pass more than 40 times and threw for almost 300 yards on a windy day with some rain as pretty good. If anything, I’m a little disappointed our running game didn’t do a little better. But from a numbers standpoint, we were pretty much where we needed to be. Gotta get points a couple times when we didn’t. Not getting a touchdown when we were right at their goal line was tough. So was having a pick overturned by a hands to the face penalty (when we would have taken over with really good field position). That’s your two touchdown margin right there in my opinion.
