Great time for the bye week, this team is really nicked up and could use the time to get healthy. Last night was the first time I really noticed the young LBers struggled getting into position and looked lost at times on the FSU long runs. Hopefully after the break we can get some players back, and finish the season strong.
Yes, on the LB's. Similar out of position stuff as the Iowa game. Very coachable to fix and identify, but nothing beats experience at the LB position. Fortunately or unfortunately, we are in the middle of an excellerated cash course.

Sounded like F KU.
Yes, it was definitely F KU. This is because in the bars in Ames, you're bound to hear Mr. Brightside at least once per night and, to make it interesting, Iowa State fans started yelling F KU. I believe there are some other fanbases that doing something similar in the middle of Mr. Brightside (for example, Okie St saying F OU)

I have to vent a bit. There are 2 Iowa fans that have season tickets with me.

One has been going to Iowa State games for years---I've sat near him for at at least 15 years. He has missed 1 or 2 games in that entire time and the only reason you'd know he was an Iowa fan is he shows up in an Iowa hat for that game. But he keeps quiet and is a genuine pleasure.

The other has had season tickets for 2 or 3 years. He never misses an opportunity to tell you he's an Iowa fan, but 'he's cheering for Iowa State today'. And, well, game recognizes game because if someone were to force me to go to Kinnick and pretend that I was cheering for Iowa, I'd behave exactly like he does. He manages to pretend like he's cheering for Iowa State, but he has trouble hiding his gleefulness when things are going badly. It was a real god damned pleasure to listen to him as Iowa lost the game last night and I regret that he left before the game was finished.

Well, I’ve had a sleepless night to think about this game. It was truly a good, bad and ugly affair.

Ugly
Rocco’s passing most of the night. On a side note…it looked like Higgins was a step slow (hobbled leg) and I wonder how that affected some of the longer passes in his direction?

O line protection. They had a terrible time keeping Rocco clean against the varying blitz’s UCF brought. This begs another point…if Rocco is off the mark will teams stack the box like UCF did?

Officiating. Some of the overall worst I’ve seen this year. Missed PI calls. Missed holding calls. Ball spots.

Bad
More injuries. We sorely needed tight end play last night in the passing game. Big B going down hurt.

Tackling. I’ve seen too many games where we simply don’t wrap up and/or take poor angles on tackles.

Play calling by Mouse (part of the time…see below). On some drives we had things working and then it seemed like he tried to get “cute” instead of pounding things. The delay of game inside the ten was def on the coaching staff.

Good
Grit. This team has grit in spades. The wheels are falling off the bus and these guys just keep battling. There was a no quit mentality out there.

Def backs. Overall they eliminated the UCF passing game.

Running game. I saw Sama running vertically into the line. Hansen was unstoppable until he got dinged up. Geesh…98 yards in one quarter?

Mouse’s play calls. The majority of the time he was mixing things up and keeping UCF off balance. This is the sole reason ISU had so many successful drives in the second half.

Great. That last drive. What a thing to behold.

This team PROVED last night they are a good team. It showed in everything they did to overcome adversity and pull this one out.
Excellent summary!

After re-watching the game, I actually feel way more encouraged about how good this team is.

First thing though, is it won’t matter if we keep getting injured. Those are piling up and will eventually be too much. It almost was last night.

Now, we played an atrocious football game at times last night. Rocco missing wide open throws, the line forgetting how to pass pro and of course two pick 6’s (yes that second one still is). We gave up over 300 rushing yards, lost the turnover battle and missed a PAT. Yet we won and gave up only 7 points in the second half (again that pick 6 was really the score even though it was a rush TD on the next play) and we had over 500 yards of offense.

Could we have another game like that? Sure, but out of 7 games, last night was the outlier. So unless we think we will throw two pick 6’s and give up three huge TD plays (all of which we haven’t done until last night), I would say things are looking good.

The key is health at this point to me, and that sucks that it’s a thing.

Thank you to the entire team and coaches on tonight’s victory! My wife’s cousin (lifetime Hawkeye fan) attended his first ever Cyclone football game, and boy, will it be one he never forgets!!!

Maybe we can turn him into a regular wearer of the Cardinal & Gold!

He said he loved the tailgating and was amazed by the amount of energy in the stadium! The crowd was incredible!

Go Cyclones!

Also, SIAP, but had to run to the bathroom at one point in the game. I'm pretty sure I heard Harklau say Tyler Miller was getting sick on the sidelines between plays. If that was true, it sure didn't help our OLine.
I thought I heard someone, either Hark or Walter’s maybe?, say something about a bug. Reminiscent of the Ohio game

The other guy is a friend? Sounds evil to me.

The optimist in me says we will be undefeated heading into the 10th week of the season despite not even playing a good complete game yet unless you like to put a lot of value on blowouts over the likes of Arkansas State at home, and despite a ridiculous number of injuries.

The pessimist in me wonders if I’m overrating what a good complete game looks like for this team.

Injuries are a normal part of sports that affect every team every year, but this is just getting kind of ridiculous. Maybe there’s a training issue but I wouldn’t pin much of it on strength and conditioning. The guys who get hit as hard as possible every play (offensive line) have been fairly healthy. There’s not much you can do S&C-wise that will stop your leg from bending in funny directions when tackled awkwardly, or other similar things.

Worthy of note: in the post game interviews JR Singleton stated UCF was very prepared for their defense as they had a 'dry run' against the 3-3-5 having played Cincinnati the week before. Believe some on here pointed this out back when Veidt took the D-coordinator job there - fwiw

Yeah, they traded a down to stop the clock, after a pass play that gained significant yards and they had to rush the team to get set at the line. I can see criticizing the call with the time remaining, but it wasn’t the worst call.

If ISU ended up running out of downs there to lose, we’d all be really upset about the wasted down. If ISU rushed a play there and turned over the ball to lose, we’d be upset about the rushed play. It was a strategy choice (like dozens of others during any game) and this time it worked out for the good guys.
It was a good call.

I was surprised by the spike call but I didn't get too upset. With only one minute left and the clock running from the 20 yard line, no timeouts, and the game hanging in the balance, the next few play calls would absolutely decide who the winner would be.

Obviously, we knew we wouldn't be punting or kicking a field goal on 4th down, so we still had 3 plays to get the 1st down or the touchdown.

The spike gave us a chance to get our composure and think carefully about the next few play calls. Was it the right decision? Probably not, but I'm not gonna be too critical. The result was good.
We ran 99 offensive plays. Team was gassed and then some.

An OL was puking on the field right before the snap. I was wondering if a ref could stop the game - like an injury TO and remove him from the game.
