Olympic Wrestling

Oof. Vinesh was cutting from 57kg down to 50kg for the tournament. Hospitalized trying to make weight for the 2nd day.

She missed weight by 100 grams. That is 0.1 KG. Essentially a rounding error. And now she’s in the hospital.

Pretty sickening and sad. Feel awful for her.

And…it’s ******** the Cuban is given a medal after getting smacked 10-0 in the semi’s.

It's a small amount sure, but it's not like the two day weigh-ins snuck up on anyone. The fact that they had to go to such extremes to even get her that close to weight is insane and her team clearly didn't have her health and well being in mind. Even if the scale read 50.0kg, she would have been in brutal condition and probably in the hospital regardless.

Different point, but 100% agree.

And She’s about to get smacked again by Hildebrandt

The thing I feel bad about is that she doesn’t get a medal. Beat everyone in front of her the 1st day, but gets disqualified from whole tournament for not making weight the 2nd day. Not sure I agree with that.

Japan moves up to wrestle for bronze, and she didn’t wrestle either finalist.

What a **** show.
In fairness, Susaki was almost certainly going to get bronze anyways. She'd never lost an international match until yesterday.

Agree with Buf, seems rough to take away the medal from her regardless... India could have just said she was injured if they knew she wasnt going to make weight. If she MFF'd she'd get Silver and no changes elsewhere in the bracket.

For me, it's the fact that Vinesh's "regular weight" is 57kg (125.4).

There's a 57kg class and a 53kg (116.6) class in the Olympics. Why someone decided that she had to go all the way down to 50kg (110.0) to compete is a bit of a headscratcher.
I will agree with that. That cut was insane. How many hours did she have after weighing in before she wrestled? I would be interested in how much she was over after her semi finals match. I bet it was a crazy amount

I think i saw she was 52.7kg after her semifinal.

"cool story bro" warning

I was in a state final and my opponent didn't make weight and had been running it off without getting there even with the allowance. Rumors spread someone saw his father coach (who had a rep as a nutjob) induced a nose bleed before he finally made it. I didn't win but it was kind of bizarre that it entered my head the match might not happen as I got updates from people watching it all.

An American update though, Dominique Parrish lost to Fujinami of Japan opening match. No shame there and she’ll almost certainly be pulled back into repechage and go for bronze. Fujinami is maybe the best female wrestler pound for pound in the world currently.

On the Greco side, the men complete a typical abysmal international tournament. Our 4 wrestlers that qualified all have been eliminated and went 0-5 combined.
A lot of talk about Amit as the future goat, but this Japanese woman is amazing. Also only 20 years old and just made the finals via two pins and a tech in the semis. Highly skilled with great motion and attacks. Really fun to watch.

Yeah I was thinking of Amit only from the american side really, but she could be up there. Japan has the real legends in the sport and it seems like Fujinami is the next great from their side.

They’re both good enough and young enough to be world wide goats. Will be interesting to watch both their careers play out.

With Vinesh Phogat's disqualification, the medal standings have shifted. USA's Sarah Hildebrandt will take the gold medal, while Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, whom Phogat defeated in the semifinals, will receive the bronze. The silver medal spot will remain vacant because of Phogat's disqualification.

No. Hildebrandt wrestles Guzman Lopez for gold. Silver is not going to be vacant.
