House of the Dragon

very good episode. Really enjoying the characterizations that they're taking the time for. It would have ebeen easy to make Aegon just another Joffrey, just a horrible, sadistic person. Instead, they are giving him layers. Yes, he's not a very good king, but he isn't really evil. He's a kid who had the throne thrust on him. He was just a chess piece, moved by others. His mother doesn't really care for him. He wants to be a good king, but has no idea how to do it, and his ego and impetuousness aren't doing him any favors.
Let's not forget, he *is* a serial rapist who has taken plenty of pleasure in emotionally tormenting Aemond for his entire life (including the pig/dragon incident, which given their ages was hard to believe that it wasn't Aegon's idea). Given the time jumps, this is mainly conjecture, but I've gotten the sense from the portrayals that Alicent probably did care for him at one time, but his flaws persisted to the point that she gave up.

It seems like Rhaenyra is up against it to me. She doesn't seem to have battle strategy savvy, not does any of her consort. Daemon likely has some acumen, but his mind is clouded right now between spite and the haunted halls of Harenhall. The Greens have them painted into a corner, Rhaenyra has no answer for Ser Christon and Prince Aemond. Nor do they have a dragon advantage anymore. It is like she said in the episode Sunday night, she must either win the throne or die. I realize I could probably look up and see what happens, but where would the fun in that be?

Great episode, felt like the buildup finally paid off. Now some more set up episodes to get to the season finale, Rhaenyra needs some wins now.

I bet making a good dragon fight is a lot harder than it looks and I think they really pulled it off. I especially liked how much they went back to the normal soldiers to keep the destruction in context. I wish there was some more consequence for Aegon after that fight, it deflated some of the stakes that he and his dragon were still alive after all that. My only complaint.

I got too caught up in the fight to listen to Rhaenyra's speech to her son, what did that end up being about?

She started to tell him the song of Ice and Fire that Viserys told Rhaenyra.

Aegon surviving sets up more potential infighting as I’d assume there will be questions about Aemond’s attack. Will Aemond try to take control in the power vacuum while Aegon is incapacitated? If he were dead, they’d name a new king and move on. Now, there will be opportunities for Aemond to take power and also potentially put him at odds with Sir Christin.

There is a lot of good intrigue coming. My guess would have been that Alicent will use the opportunity to recapture power and bring Otto back into the mix. But yes, infighting between Alicent, Aemond and Cole/Hightower will be interesting and may give Rhaenyra her only shot at getting back into this.

They would use it as a battle cry, remember King Aegon!!!
Potentially. Aegon hasn’t been in rule long enough to establish himself as a figure worth fighting in remembrance of imo.

I think it more likely that there would be chaos. There would a power struggle internally between Aemond, the Alicent/Otto Hightower (Aegon’s 6-month baby is the heir next in line since his first son was murdered), and possibly Cole.

Also the houses (except for the Starks), will be loyal to whoever benefits them the most. A Green side in disarray would probably spook some of the paramounts to side with Rhaenyra (like CU bolting for the P12 in 2010 and back to the B12 last year). It seems most of the great houses haven’t declared yet.

This season has been great. I think I've finally got all the characters straightened out in my head but man it's hard for me to get it in my head Aegon is the older brother to Aemond. Aemond looks 20 years older.

Anyway, Aemond rocks. I hope he ***** everyone up except the Valrians.

I’m assuming we’re going to eventually get a Daemon vs Aemond battle. And if we do, I’m here for it. On dragons or off, don’t care.

That's my bet on the season finale. Maybe when they finally decide to fight over Harrenhal.

Isn’t season 3 confirmed? I’d bet we’ll get a dragon battle this season with inconclusive results. Leading to another battle in season 3. Can’t go into season 3 with one of them off the board.
