Because I just watched inside out 2, it made me think about different songs that reflect different emotions.
Sadness
Joy
Anger
Fear
Disguist
Anxiety
Nostalgia
Embarrassment
Envy

I had a conversation with my MIL a few weeks back as she was commenting on the music I had in the house when they came by. I had Pink Floyd’s The Final Cut and she couldn’t understand why I’d listen to music that she referred to as depressing. And my response was, that’s the point. Not all music is intended to be happy.

But my music selection is all over the place depending on my feelings. Some days I need to put Linkin Park on to deal with anger and anxiety and some days I put on Miles Davis to mellow out. But the music almost always follows my emotions rather than creates them.

Sadness

Joy

Anger

Fear

Disgust

Anxiety

Nostalgia

Embarrassment

Envy

But the music almost always follows my emotions rather than creates them.

I’m the exact opposite. I am aware of how much music effects my mood so I purposely choose music that pulls me into a good state of mind.

I feel almost every kind of emotin when I listen to The War on Drugs, but this song imparticular gets me everytime. Joy and Sadness all in one song.

We have emotions for a reason. Don't be afraid to confront them head on.

Yeah I don't find listening to solemn music to be 'depressing'. I'm feeling a certain way, listen to something that's maybe along those lines and it helps to work through it a bit.

But that's just me.

Same with Call Me Maybe.

It's a 3 minute roller coaster.

I don't understand why people feel the need to criticize listening to something somber. It's very therapeutic for me.

I feel like the general population would benefit by understanding how different things effect our emotions in different ways.

Lighting, music, exercise, what we eat, different smells, etc.

I occasionally will use these things to "set the mood". I don't (always) mean that romantically. If I'm trying to focus (work mostly), or get hyped up for something, or to get ready to sleep. But the bigger issue is when we're being manipulated by outside sources to achieve some goal. Any time you're being sold something, there's an effort to manipulate your emotions.
