Even if his goal is the NBA, no need to jump if the franchise isn't a good fit.
And then add in the much higher tax rates living in CA + the higher cost of living. I doubt he really wanted this job and was using this as potential leverage for future contracts.

Isn’t Conn. considered one of the most expensive states to live in as well? Either way, it doesn’t matter where you live with that kind of money.

Not terribly surprised Hurley turned it down. The media kept saying that it was a “massive” offer, a “once in a lifetime“ salary offer. But it wouldn’t even put him in the top four or five range, and it would be less than what Detroit is paying Williams. Lakers have a hisory of lowballing prospective coaches and I think this was one of those times, considering that Hurley has a chance of making a three-peat In college. UCONN was never going to match $12 million, but the Lakers probably shot themselves in the foot here.
Smart move. Folks out here breathed a huge sigh of relief today. Most UCONN fans thought he was gone, but he’s wired differently. I kept pointing out to them that he is competitive and wants to win at the highest level, so he probably will go to the NBA at some point. BUT, he’s really been big on trying to pull off a three-peat next year. That’s a massive challenge in and of itself. So he’s still pushing himself and his insane competitive nature.
Someone earlier mentioned it too that he’s never getting fired from UCONN now barring a total collapse, so 20-30 years more at even his current salary is a **** ton of money. And he will continue to get raises as he goes along. He’s not a guy to retire early and do nothing, as I think that would actually drive him insane. He’s an odd bird and sitting around doing nothing is not in his nature imo.

I get why he would stay…honestly why leave? He’ll keep winning nattys, he’s got all the money he wants, he’s got the momentum. Why go to the Lakers to coach spoiled brats who can’t win despite having one of the GOATS? If I’m DH, I’m stuck like Chuck.

I still think people aren't putting enough value on his wife's and his family being near them.
Could have been an important reason to stay. Why interview then? Well, maybe he did them a favor and heard them out, and maybe it prepares him for the next step when he decides to do that.

That is life changing money he turned down but he's living pretty comfortably without it too. The average shelf life for an NBA coach especially one without any prior NBA coaching expirience is not long so does money outweigh making a legacy? Coach K turned down the NBA and is one of the greatest coaches of all time. I would love to know if Hoiberg has any regrets for taking the Bulls job as he was on track to leave a legacy no one could touch at ISU had he stayed. His system may have been a bit flawed as we did not play good defense but he left with a loaded roster and who knows what momentum he would have had with that over the long haul and Covid.
I moved on from Fred quickly after he chose the Bulls and NBA over making a legacy for himself at ISU. All in on TJ right now who I get the feel he's about building a legacy here and not chasing fame and money. Always felt if a coach takes us to unprecedented territory in any sport where we win a national championship or build a program that can sustain a level to compete for championships our fans and donors will support it where we can pay them competitively to stay here.

Kansas fans on the XTwitter are pretty bothered by folks calling Hurley the best in CBB. He should go ahead and destroy them.
Rule of thumb is you always take the interview and listen. You never know what offer someone will make. In the end you just say no if it’s not for you.
