Let’s talk Jackrabbits

We seem to be loading up the defense just a little bit less than we had earlier, and a little more selective in the hard traps. Just staying in front of our guys with just a little help/hedging and then springing the aggressive traps as a surprise. Gave up 57, 62 and 41 (avg 53.3) in the Big 12 tournament, so I'd say it worked.

It seems to be way more effective and less predictable.

Seems like swing and skip passes haven't come as easy for opponents as a result.

It's been 5 years since TJ coached there. I don't think there is a player on their roster that would have played for him. It's not like they're still holding onto some vendetta that would give them extra motivation still. It'd be like us playing Nebraska. Yeah, there would be some intrigue there, but it's not like we're going to be extra fired up to beat a Hoiberg team. That's way in the past.

The part that concerns me a bit is that the coaches know TJ and his tendencies. It goes both ways, but I do think it helps an underdog.

I’m not wasting my time looking at out first two opponents since we will easily destroy them.

looking ahead to Illinois or BYU.

Meh, we basically have offensive and defensive coordinators in our assistants, and have adjusted yearly to our talent. Knowing TJ at SDSU or UNLV wouldn't help a ton IMO

This feels like a game where a top tier team in the best conference takes it to a mid major in a below average league. I get you can’t over look teams and anything can happen in March but play our game on defense and be mediocre on offense and you win by 15.
Feels like it, but this team is around 150 kenpom compared to the 300+ teams that we are truly able to overwhelm. They aren't going to just lay down for us and will probably give us a fight for 20-30 minutes.

Lot of older players. Some with Iowa connections. Glancing at their roster, have a Mims kid from Xavier in CR and a Marshalltown kid. Zeke Mayo can score, but K state and UCF held him to 11 and 12 points. Mims didn’t play either of those two games, maybe was injured, I don’t know. I didn’t look at all their roster.

I'll never forget iowa's tiny dix trying to get past half court on our guards and looking like a middle schooler turning it over. I still smile every time I think about it.
That game feels like it was played so long ago.

As mentioned above, they can shoot the ball pretty well and don't turn it over a ton. But they don't do a lot else well, including offensive rebounding, forcing turnovers or getting to the line.

They don't shoot a ton of 3s, but they've made at least 7 in each of their last 13 games. However, they've given up at least 7 in every game this year except 1 (a non-conf win against Southern Miss). We should be able to get some good looks outside.

They played one team with a defense anywhere close to ours, in a neutral site game agianst UCF which they lost by only 3. They lost by 23 in a road game at KSU, but those are the only decent teams they played all season.

They turned the ball over a season high 16 times against UCF. That should be the target number (> 16 TOs). I don't expect them to be able to handle our pressure.

And ISUs worst losses in terms of KP were probably at KSU (68) and neutral vs. VT (57).

Look, if ISU loses to SDSU (or Drake for that matter) it sucks, but then they weren't going anywhere anyway.

That's the whole thing about college basketball and March Madness. If it's about one season laying out for you, you're bound to get disappointed. The way to do damage in March is to get there consistently with top 5-6 seeds and take lots of whacks at the pinata and occasionally things will fall your way.

I'm just not going to worry about path or matchups, or seeds. We've got the right coach that's going to do what leads to March success over time - Get there a bunch with teams that can realistically compete with the top teams.
