* WHAT...Heavy snow possible. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 10
inches. Winds could gust as high as 30 to 40 mph, resulting in
near whiteout conditions at times.
* WHERE...Northeast Iowa, southeast Minnesota, southwest into
central Wisconsin.
* WHEN...From late Thursday night through Saturday morning.
* IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. Blowing snow could
significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions would
impact the morning and evening commute.

That's just wrong. Snow days are for video games, snow forts, snowball fights and sledding. Nobody wants to do no school on snow days.
If we ever wanted a day off from school when it was really cold somebody would just go unplug the busses in the middle of the night. They were all parked outside. Bam. No school.
We got a plow in our neighborhood for the first time overnight. It was packed down enough that the plow just shot a bit of ice at the bottom of the drive.
About the same here (SE ankeny, they rolled through around 330 in the morning). And nowhere near all the way to the curb so roads are still narrowed.
Here is SE CR we got a city pickup with a blade that went up and down our street twice about noon today. It didn't get down to the pavement and barely cleared a vehicle width
Clear your driveways on Friday night before the real cold hits on Saturday.
I had forgotten what a mess the roads are after a snow storm. The side streets in WEST DES MOINES are pretty garbage still this afternoon. Add in an inch or two tonight and 7-10 inches tomorrow night/Friday and it'll be a **** show.

I am with ya, but I also remember all the snow Minnesota had last winter - it melted and ran off into the Mississippi, causing plenty of high water in the spring - but it didn’t help soil moisture conditions at all this summer.
In general, yes, we need moisture to get back into the soil and lots of it.
First call. Dry slot to contend with to the south. Still some questions on where the heaviest swath falls. That should be ironed out in the next 12 hours.
I do think we'll have big blowing/drifting snow and visibility issues with this one. "Drier" snow. Already full ditches. Stronger wind. I think gusts are around 45 mph through mid-day afternoon on Friday.
