I understand your concern, but I’m not there. Houston was the number one ranked defense in the nation, and only three teams they’ve played against scored more than we did, none of which had the defense that we have. We have enough offense to keep us in every game we play.
Curtis Jones has to provide 6-8 points a game for this team to take the next step on offense. Also, the bench isn't consistent enough to provide 6-10 points per game which is what we need out of them in Big12 play.

Lol **** that. They were lucky they didn't call a lot more fouls on Houston. Should've been a flagrant 2 on Damian Dunn and there were a few moving screens and one really blatant one . Plus lots of others
UH was absolutely mugging our guards the last 6 or so minutes of the game and the refs swallowed their whistles

I'm with you but even with Houston's good defense, our offense against good teams has not been very good all year.

Against NCAA tournament type teams we have scored 68, 62, 69, 63, and 57. That's enough of a trend to know the offense is not as good as it appears after beating up on 300+ NET teams. The guys are still figuring out how to play together against really good teams and last night they made up for an average offense on the defensive end. That is great to see.

Agreed. The deep shots were falling early, but not as the game went on. Gotta wonder if all that energy spent on defense played a factor in that. I don’t think they would trade any of that defense for late game shooting, but the game plan will need to adjust accordingly.

Ward and King will need to be scorers for us. Several great plays with interior passing was nice to see between King, Ward, and Jones. That’ll always be a good source for points.

There are times when a guard gets past or defenders and they stop the drive 15 feet out because there see Jones in the right spot. Everyone says Jones' effort and toughness are key, but his BB IQ is through the roof.

Not just Jones, but the look on the opponents face when they drive baseline and then remember the scouting report is priceless. "Oh ****, this is not where I want to be."
I don't think it's just his BB IQ that's high. I love listening to his interviews. He's a really bright guy.

Just calling a-club-a-club here, he was a coach that got caught doing recruiting violations. Many, many coaches have gone uncaught, I can assure you.

Now recruiting violations with coaches is going to be unheard of and less scrutinized by the NCAA.

Make no mistake, Kelvin is not my favorite coach, but he and his staff are terrific in-game coaches.

Sampson getting a serious reprimand for those violations is hilarious looking back on it from now. No wonder the guy seems pissed off all of the time.

I think this will come with time. He does a lot of other really good things that get deflected as 'no value' but a few posters (not you).

The bench might find some more consistencies as things move along.

He doesn’t need to do that every night. He might need to pop up with a 10 or 12 point game from time to time. He played solidly again last night. 1 R, 3 AST, 1 ST, 0 TO in 17 minutes in a game in the 50’s. Thats an almost perfect periphery role player line imo.

So he cheats with respect to the rest of the league. I see TCU got hosed in Lawrence already. We beat Houston knocking off the rest of the competition, and KU gets gifted a couple games at home. Seems like a typical big12 season. Bill's definitely in a category of his own.
TCU did not get hosed.

I’m still miffed by the refs not going to the monitor to see if it was a flagrant 2 or not. It looked dang nasty on TV. Every angle looked bad. Big Energy just calmly sank both FTs though.

I can't remember if it was this moment or the other time he went to the line but I thought it was funny when Fran was essentially quoting TJ in saying how BRE isn't talented but the work and energy have been huge for the program.

Repeating but I think players appreciate TJ's brutal honesty without degrading them.

I’m probably in the minority on this but I thought a flagrant 1 and keeping the game moving was a good choice by the refs. I was impressed with the crew last night. I’m fine with a physical game as long as it’s consistent.

I thought it was a flagrant 2 but agree with the general flow of the game and how the offiicials did a great job of maintaining it (along with the consistency you mentioned).

Sure enough, at the two minute mark he left our seats in a panic, he said it was a photo finish to the bathroom. He missed the climax of the game, the final two minutes because he was on the sh#tter at Hilton. LOL

I hope he realizes that this is now a rule: in a tight game, he has to spend the last 2 minutes in the can.

It was pretty bad. Especially under the hoop on rebounds.

In fairness we got away with some stuff too.

I just don't think we are going to get the benefit of those calls when we have so many guys (Milan and Tre for example) who often fail to block out and/or get caught watching the basketball instead of playing it. There were a good 3-5 offensive boards we gave up where one of those 2 failed to fundamentally do one of those two things. I'm sure the officials see that too and, after a while, it allows the more aggressive and fundamental rebounding team to get away with some extras.

TJs comment at the post game presser says it all:

"We have all the respect in the world for their program and what they've done, but nobody's gonna come in here and pressure us. Nobody's gonna come in here and bully us. Nobody's gonna call us an underdog in Hilton Coliseum."
Did you notice he started choking up when asked about the crowd? Kudos to anyone in the stands last night! Hilton Magic.

Love it! TJ really wanted this one.
He understandably struggles on offense against teams that can take away his drives into the paint but he is deadly against teams that can't. If he can defend like that, he's a plus player either way. Really just needs to add a few percentage points to his deep shooting and teams won't be able to sag back to prevent the drive.
100%. I think he'll be a guy in Big 12 play who in some games won't be much of a factor on offense (e.g. last night) but in other games will be largely unstoppable and go off for 20.

Another random thought: I hope this is a big confidence boost for Milan. He's generally been pretty good when he's looking to get his own shot and I hope he'll now realize he can be a great player at this level and can score on anyone in this league.

If I remember correctly his worst offense was that he was texting recruits during the dead period. Got fired and then got caught doing it again. Seems pretty tame when you compare it to the under-the-table bags of cash that were being passed around at places like Kansas and UNC.
