***2023-24 College Football Thread***

Might be a small thing, but I guess the NCAA could set a rule that any player sitting out of the post season cannot participate in on-campus NFL workouts.

But that’s really the only thing that I think they could do to control this. So you might as well just create a 16 team playoff and do away with bowl games.

They could do that... and have the unintended effect of killing the importance of on-campus workouts.

Absolutely loving this FSU live autopsy. Such entitled fan base (prior to this years controversy) getting pounded so hard they may end up pregnant.

I don't think anyone's saying the players don't try hard.

It's fans that are living and dying off of a bowl game with little or no consequence to them personally.
Unfortunately a number of people have questioned the players' effort, which is ridiculous, but other than that I agree with you.

Very well could. I’m just not sure there’s anything else to do to reduce the opt outs. They’ve already allowed for insurance policies to be paid by schools. That hasn’t really made a difference for these players.

Orange bowl blowout has me watching the Barstool bowl. I'd be annoyed as a Wyoming or Toledo fan, but as someone who doesn't give a **** its entertaining to listen to the over the top announcing.

exactly. This whole realignment thing is going to be like that phase in the late 80's, early 90's where people tight rolled their jeans. going to look back and wish they hadn't done it....lol

the top 8 SEC schools all hire coaches to consistently win the SEC and win 10+ games, make the playoffs and win a title.
OU is going to go from a consistent brand that wins to just another school.
and what will probably happen is those average schools are going to complain about they have to play in the hardest league of all time and can't win 10 games consistently, and it's not fair the ACC and Big12 get to skate by, etc. That is why its probably good that Arizona coming in not looking like dogwater.

Its going to be well documented in the next 10 years on how some of these teams turn out.
Take Iowa for example, I would bet the odds are really good they make the Big Ten Title game next year if they left the big ten alone. With the restructuring, they may not see it ever again as the odds that USC, UCLA, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin, Mich, Ohio St, Penn St all being down are not good.
I think OU goes from a traditional 10 win team to more of an 8-9 wins. remember the SEC still has the 8 game schedule.
The current version of "re-alignment" is less about the short to mid- term impacts on wins and losses / playoff access in the current format, and is more about the large scale breakaway and related changes that's going to happen. OU had to go to the SEC to align for those large scale changes. They will look back and be ok with their decision.

It validates that the right but difficult choice was made to squeeze them out.

If being #5 vs #4 somehow results in 20 players out there’s something massively broken in the sport. Some of this was happening even had they got in.

If there was some small basketball championship that excluded the Big 12 it would be as fake as wwe.
No it’s not, players very rarely if ever opt out of a playoff game

Why do you need to reduce opt outs in teh first place? The guys opting out are done with the program and will be going to the NFL. Why risk millions playing in a game that isn’t for a championship? The expanded playoff will make 12 top teams not have opt outs.

We're seeing on full disply why it's time to revisit how to do NIL/transfer season to make the non playoff bowls interesting again.

I'd guess even 12 team playoff teams have players sit out.

Honestly if you've got millions on the line, the reasons for sitting out for lower bowls are almost as valid for national title contenders. Sure, it'd be amazing to win a national championship, but at the cost of risking millions if you get injured? Sure, they get a chance to show their talents vs the best college football has that year, but players that are locks for the NFL? They've got miles of tape.

We havent seen it as much so far, but it wouldnt surprise me if the 12 team playoff starts to cause it to happen.

I’m planning a thread asking specifically which games DO matter. About 110 of 140 teams have no real chance of being top 12, so if only playoff games matter why should it all even exist?
I see where you’re going. I think ISU football games in general are entertaining so that’s my measure. Bowl or not.

Yeah are they going to want to risk playing three more games/practice weeks?

I don't blame them but we'll see an even more watered down product.

If you are the #12 seed and looking at a possible blow out on the road at the #5 seed home field, I could easily see a couple of their NFL prospects saying, "nah, I am good".

They play two right now and no one sits out. Players typically don’t sit out championship games because it actually means something. I don’t think the expanded playoff will change that if anything it will keep more guys playing then would have sat out like with FSU, OSU, PSU, etc

Especially given how wide the gap even between the top few and even #5 or #6 tends to have been lately.

Honestly if they're not on one of the 4 teams with a bye week, signing up for 3 more games is a decision I think we'll see more and more opts out from over time.

if you start seeing this, then why even play the last few games of the year?

Several players have opted out of the last few games over the last few years or entered the portal.

The reason to have the games is the same as it ever was: money.

People watch the games, people make money.

I can’t recall of too many players opting out of the last few games of the season for the NFL prep, you got names with that statement? Entering the portal is a totally different thing, if they were an important player on a team in the playoffs they aren’t in the portal.

You guys are trying to make this into something it’s not
