A lot of the things we did back then simply wouldn't fly nowadays. I never saw a climber safety next to a truss ladder back in the day. Not too many years later there wasn't a show out there that didn't have it as standard equipment. There weren't any safeties on trusses hanging off of chain climbers. Now they will throw you off of a call if you don't clip into the cables across the top of every truss.
It's all for the better, but certainly different. After I left Hilton I went to work at another very old arena for a couple of years. When I went up in the ceiling there once they mentioned that they had been paying the widow of one worker for something like 50 years because he fell from the ceiling and died. Not exactly a safe business back in the day.
Sixteen year old me on top of ladder adjusting spot lights for the school play. Lights were on a bar suspended just a little lower than the gymnasium ceiling. Scared the hell out of me. Under the direction of the English and drama teacher who was a never ending power trip for anyone who wasn't the lead in his ******* play.
Like the one below but wooden and MUCH taller. Bet they don't even make them like that anymore.
